Monday Madness: People Are Seriously Losing Their Sh#!

The Following

Joe sends his followers out to create a diversion while he, Claire, Jacob, and Emma make their escape, to the sea. Ryan is trying to find out what Joe’s plan is and where he’s taking Claire. Debra and Mike both think that Joe will give Ryan a chance to try to save Claire, but Ryan’s a little more pessimistic about Joe’s motives.

After the followers show up and start wreaking havoc in town, Masque of the Red Death style, Ryan’s got bigger fish to fry. Debra gets taken hostage and actually gets buried alive! Right before the finale! OMG.

Joe brings Claire to a house while the followers are out “serving their purpose” but the married couple who lives there is home, so they get taken hostage for a few hours. Claire helps them escape, injuring Joe a second time, but she lets herself get taken captive again to give them a chance to get away.

At the end, when Emma realizes Jacob is about to leave Joe for good, she slits his throat. It was a very emotional moment for them, but it was pretty clear one of them was going to kill the other.

It’s the finale next week! Already! Who will survive? Don’t miss next week’s episode!

Bates Motel

WOW–there was a lot going on in this episode, and quite a bit of it was in the past. Norma wants to go after Zack to talk to him after the truth sinks in about the Chinese girl, but Norman stops her, knowing she’s going to do a hell of a lot more than talk.

Emma tries to convince them to take the girl to the police and get Zack put away for good, but Norma refuses, saying the girl needs her rest and they’ll go in the morning. However, she isn’t planning on taking the girl anywhere until they make sure she and Norman are cleared of Keith’s murder, i.e. they find the belt Norman took and get rid of it.

However, while Dylan and Norman go looking for it back on the boat where Norman and Emma found the girl, Zack shows up at the motel looking for a little lovin’. Norma can’t look at him the same way, knowing what he did to the girl in his basement, but she does her best to put on the act while he’s there.

Bad luck again: the girl is staying in the motel, where Zack and Norma decide to take their tryst, and she takes a shower, setting off alarm bells for Zack. If no one’s in the motel, why would there be running water?

Now we know for sure: a resounding NO!

He takes off to find who’s squatting in the motel, and Norma tries to make up an excuse, saying she forgot about the person who has a reason to be in there running water, a painter, but Zack knows she’s lying. Still, he has no clue that it’s the Chinese girl behind the door. She screams when she sees him and takes off in to the woods. He swats Norma away when she tries to protect the girl, and takes off into the woods.

Dylan and Norman return and Dylan insists that Norman is moving in with him. Norman brings up his father’s death, and Norma, clearly overwhelmed by everything that’s happening, can’t explain it to him just then.

Zack returns, and puts the gun on the Bates family, marching them up to the house. When he starts attacking Norma, mainly verbally, but hitting her a couple times as well, Norman goes into a funny trance and takes him down. A struggle ensues, with Dylan getting hold of a gun and having a shootout with the deputy. Luckily, Dylan wins and the deputy dies on the steps in front of the house.

Norma explains how Norman’s father died, saying that she didn’t kill him–in fact, it was Norman. Who went into that same funny trance, as his father was abusing Norma in the other room. Norma covered it up to make it look like an accident, and let Norman discover his father’s body after he came out of his trance. He remembered nothing of his actions, and believed his father’s death to be accidental.

Dylan, knowing the truth, or Norma’s version of it (it seems to check out, so I’ll buy it), now has to decide what they’re going to tell the police when they arrive to find the deputy on the Bates’ front steps.

Every time you think you’ve got something worked out in this show’s story, they throw you another twist! Brilliant storytelling–Emma’s kind of a pain in the ass character, but she’s a good obstacle for Norma, so I understand her purpose. Norman’s got hidden corner that run deeper than even he knows, and that’s where the meat of this story really lies. Can’t wait for next week!

About the Blog

This is a place to share my love and excessive fandom of film, actors, and television. I gush a lot, and I complain a lot, usually not simultaneously.

I share my take on the latest movies I’ve seen (some new, some new to me, and some classics that are worth a rewatch), and a little promotion here and there for shows or films that I feel deserve a little more attention than they’re getting.

So, kick back, settle in, switch on, tune in, or whatever you have to do and join in on the love for all things that move on-screen.
