Since Smash moved to Saturdays, we’ve got two episodes this week, from Tuesday and Saturday night. And, new Grey’s and Elementary are also below.
Smash “The Parents”
Ivy’s mom joins Bombshell as Marilyn’s mother, and Karen’s dad comes to town. Hence the title. I really love Bernadette Peters, so it’s fun to have her back on the show, but it’s too bad she and Ivy don’t get along.
Karen’s dad gets the wrong idea when he sees a guy sneaking out Karen’s fire escape, and thinks it’s Derek when he sees him wearing the same jacket. However, he figures out that it was actually Jimmy.
Everybody loves the debut of Hit List to the theater’s supporters, and Ana gets her big moment in the spotlight. And then Scott calls in Julia as a “dramaturg” to help with the book on Hit List. Kyle is nervous, but it actually turns out to be a big help.
Smash “The Surprise Party”
It’s Ivy’s birthday and Tom is still trying to make up with her after hiring her mother onto the show. He comes through big and gets Liza Minnelli to sing at her birthday dinner, but things get a little messy again when he finds out she was having another birthday party without him.
Derek gets a little edgy when Karen finally tells him about her and Jimmy. Jimmy comes through and makes it up to Karen for lying about why he wanted to keep their relationship a secret, but Derek takes another direction. He hears Kyle, Julia and Scott’s new take on the book for the show and approves it without Jimmy and Karen’s input.
He is the director, so he can do what he wants. I think he’s right not to get Jimmy and Karen’s input on this. He’s a little too close to both of them in different ways, and taking back the decision-making is probably best to put a little emotional distance back into the situation.
I think part of the reason the ratings are falling is because they’re underutilizing all of their best characters! Eileen’s role is too big, Derek’s is too small, Jimmy’s is too big, Ivy’s isn’t big enough, Julia really needs to get back in the game. She’s got top billing in the credits and she has the smallest role on the show the past few weeks.
The writers really need to get their shit together if they’re looking for season three. If anyone lets shows run longer than they should, it’s NBC, so they’ve got a fighting chance, but seriously–they really need to get things on track if they want another season.
Grey’s Anatomy
Meredith finds out she has several of the markers for Alzheimer’s and she panics and tells Derek they need a new will. Since Lexie is still on there as Zola’s guardian, it makes sense, but I think Meredith is overreacting a little bit. She would rather have Cristina take the kids, but Cristina likes the “cool aunt” idea better than the “mommy” idea. So, it’ll have to be one of Derek’s sisters.
Meanwhile, Bailey is blaming Leah for causing a post-op infection in three of her patients because Leah came in sick that day. But, Leah explains she only worked with two of them so it couldn’t have been. Bailey is the only one who worked on all three of the patients and now, we see her career may be in jeopardy.
Meanwhile, the doctors are all working together to help a couple of Syrian doctors learn surgical procedures with limited supplies and resources. April especially connects with them, and is moved to tell her boyfriend (the EMT) the truth about her virginity. She also decides to give them some diagnostic machines from Grey-Sloan, without permission. After her boyfriend rejects her for not telling him the truth, she feels that the truth is “overrated.”
After all the years I’ve been watching this show (and I started a couple seasons in), it really amazes me that the characters are the same people they’ve always been, even after everything they’ve been through.
It’s really easy as a writer to change a character’s trajectory with a single event, or change an attitude because it suits a particular episode plot, but for the most part, these people are the same funny, wonderfully kind, and hardcore surgeons we’ve all come to know and love. I miss Lexie and Mark, and I’m going to miss this show when it ends, but I’m still enjoying it nine years after the beginning.
Elementary
Holmes and Watson have to track down a murderer and connected robbery in the middle of a blizzard. And we get a little insight into their home life, refrigerator cleaning and bill paying.
It’s fun watching a crime being solved without much technology. The detectives have to resort to CB radios since the phone lines and cell phones aren’t working. Holmes and Watson also commandeer a snow plow to help them get around the city during their investigation.
They manage to track down one of the thieves involved in the first crime/murder, but they’re too late to stop the big robbery at a treasury building.
