So…. I ended up needing more time to work on my book than I originally thought. My bad. But, on the bright side, I finished it! I only caught two typos, and I learned a lot about when to trust Amazon’s file converter and when not to. It wasn’t smooth, but it is complete, and that’s something.
Since I’ve been away for so long, I am not going to recap all the episodes from the past few weeks. I’ll just do some highlights and mention some premieres.
Revenge
Padma’s dead, Victoria and Conrad and trying to hide money in the charitable foundaiton they’ve created in Amanda’s memory, Nolan has discovered the Falcon, a super hacker, is the one helping the Graysons to hide their money, Aiden is getting jealous of Emily and Daniel, Daniel is trying to rekindle things with Emily, Jack is out to get Conrad back for his role in Amanda’s death, Conrad is still running for governor.
It’s been intense, and seeing Nolan fall apart has been kind of scary. I am still loving the Emily/Daniel reunion. Daniel may have gotten a little more ruthless (aka Graysonish) since he took over Grayson Global, but he’s still a sweetheart underneath, and he still cares about Emily. Deep down, I think Emily actually cares for Daniel too, even if she’d never admit it.
Ashley’s allegiances seem to be shifting as well–I know she took up with Conrad when Victoria disgraced her, and she’s only in it for the power that comes with being Conrad’s right hand, but it’s also clear that she has no love for the Graysons, no matter how closely she wants to insinuate herself into their lives. A new alliance with Jack Porter may be interesting–I just hope they don’t try to do a love connection there. She’d make a terrible mom for baby Carl.
Red Widow
Last time I talked about this show, it was just starting out and I wasn’t sure about it. Now, I can safely say this show is pretty freakin’ great. Radha Mitchell actually carries it really well as the lead, and Goran Visnjic is PURE AWESOME as the show’s villain, but Marta’s father has also become quite a contender for evilest baddie on the show.
And as much as she dislikes it, I have to agree with Schiller, Marta fits into a life of crime like a glove. She’s a fixer, and a pretty damn good one.
How I Met Your Mother
Last week’s show was a little weird, with future Barney, future Ted, tomorrow Ted, twenty minutes from now Barney, etc. But, we learn that there are only 45 DAYS left until Ted meets his kids’ mother!
Unfortunately, I think the season is going to end before then–that would push it into mid-May, but I’m betting within the first couple episodes of the next and final season of HIMYM, we’ll finally know the identity of the girl with the yellow umbrella. Though the writers will probably still draw it out because I don’t think she and Ted get together right off anyway…
The Following
Every time I think this show can’t get any weirder or crazier, it proves me wrong. Denise left her cohorts for dead, slept with Joe, and then tried to sleep with Jacob to make up for leaving him behind, but she doesn’t realize Jacob is a new man–he killed Paul, and he’s ready to do it again.
Looks like Claire is going to have a reunion with her ex this week as she agreed to go with Joe’s guys last week so she could see her son. This left poor Ryan heartbroken and terrified, but there are only a few episodes left, so I have a feeling this is all going to come to a head very soon.
Power to Mike for not telling Joe’s guys (this was a couple weeks back) where Claire was–he took a hell of a beating, and he took it like a champ.
Bates Motel
I can’t tell you how much this show rocks my world. Vera Farmiga is even more PURE AWESOME than Goran Visnjic, and that’s saying something. She’s twisted, volatile, sexy, and yet, there’s no mistaking the motherly love she has for Norman.
The Oedipal Complex is already apparent in just the first couple of episodes here as we see how close Norma and Norman (yes, you read that right) really are. However, Norman is actually trying to be a normal high school kid.
What is strangest for me is that this show takes place now, in the present day. It’s hard to justify the prequel concept in my head of a 2013 show with the 1960 film it was based on. They have iPods, cell phones, cars that don’t look like boats, Swiffer Sweepers. Very strange. But the house, and the motel, look exactly like they did in the film, just in color.
Every episode, we get a new character introduced or a new subplot and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out. If you’re not already watching Bates Motel on A&E Mondays, you oughta be. (It does coincide with The Following, but I’ve been watching the encore, which coincides with Five-0. Meaning I have to catch up on Five-0, but CBS makes it easier than Fox, so that’s just the way it’s gotta be.)
Hawaii Five-0
Steve’s mom’s story gets more interesting by the week, while the Steve/Catherine love story has dulled. I never liked her, I’ll admit, and I never felt she was right for the show.
Lauren German was too serious, Catherine is too girly (it’s the high-pitched voice). They really want another white girl on this show, they need a white version of Kono. Cool, funny, and super-smart. Without making up backstories on the fly to make her fit whatever she’s working (e.g. the ice-skating/roller derby explanation–bitch, please).
New Girl
Since the big kiss heard round the world, Jess and Nick have been tiptoeing around each other, and then stopping to make out, for weeks. Despite how different they are, they kind of balance each other out and I think they both really need that. Sidenote, they already killed off Nick’s dad, Dennis Farina’s character–WTF? I was expecting him to return in later seasons! Balls!
And, they’ve cast Margo Martindale as Nick’s mom. Does this woman ever stop working??? First, Dexter, then Hung, then Justified, then The Americans, now New Girl. Busy lady!
Go On
Courteney Cox was awesome. I didn’t really connect the two Friends together because Ryan King is such a different character from Chandler Bing (totally didn’t realize those rhymed until just now!), that it wasn’t Chandler and Monica together again, it was Matthew and Courteney, older, wiser, and awesome as ever.
I love how they’re really filling out Ann’s, Yolanda’s and Mr. K’s roles, but some of the other group members are getting in on it too, and that’s one thing this show has needed. More dimension to the quirky grief group characters. Well done.
The New Normal
I am not as in love with this show as I was when the season started–it’s crazy to think I’ve been writing about it for six months!
I feel it’s gotten more gimmicky, more stereotypical, and it’s lost some of the heart it started out with. It still tries to tackle some of the “tough” relatable issues, but Nana’s mostly disappeared, Rocky’s screentime has skyrocketed (not necessarily a good thing) and it’s taking on those issues with more cheese and thoughtlessness than it used to.
It doesn’t resonate with me as much as it did at first, but I’m still curious to see the season through. Season two may be on the chopping block as far as I’m concerned, if the network hasn’t already made that decision.
Smash
I’m back and forth on this show about as much as the network is, I think. One week, it’s good, the next, it fails. Then it’s good again, then it falls shorts again.
Ivy quit her show, Derek and Karen quit Bombshell, Tom’s directing, Eileen’s back–so many people have come and gone between shows, it’s hard to keep up!
I think splitting the season into two shows, Bombshell and Hit List, was a mistake. There’s too much going on and it’s creating some confusion. Not to say the music is all still good, I really liked the Nat King Cole type of song they did last week, but it’s still kind of strange to have all these new songs and not know which show they belong to. Some of the new songs aren’t even in Bombshell or Hit List! Like the Nat King Cole one.
Karen and Jimmy just got together last week, finally, we saw it coming for a while, but who knows what Derek will do when he finds out–which he inevitably will, because there’d be no story without it.
I’m not crazing about Tom directing, mainly because it seems like it’s going to put Julia into a secondary, disappearing role. Also, Daniel Sunjata just disappeared too, it seems. Too bad, I liked him in this.
The show’s fate seems to hang in the balance, and it keeps losing viewers every week, but I like it enough to see it through the season, but I’m not sure it’ll make it to the fall season.
Justified
The Drew Thompson debacle is over, and I must say, that episode with the standoff in the high school was pure genius. Rachel and Thompson taking off on a train on their own while Raylan and Bob hold down the fort waiting on Boyd and his new friends.
I’m so sad that this show is almost over for the season, this week is the finale, but I hear it’s been approved for a new season, so there’s something to look forward to!
Golden Boy
I still haven’t caught up with this one. It’s got the biggest deficit of unwatched episodes, even more than Cult, and I’m not entirely sure why. I really liked the pilot, but I guess the prospect adding of another cop show to the list isn’t interesting enough for me to make it a priority.
I still plan on catching up with at least a couple episodes I fell behind on, but the scheduling confusion (first it was Tuesdays, then Fridays, now it’s back to Tuesdays) and the fact that the pace might be too slow for me may mean this show won’t be seen much around this blog.
Up Next:
I’ll discuss the rest of the regular shows in the next post–the only reason I split them up is Blogger won’t let you tag posts as many tags as are needed for this gigantic post!
