Psych
Cranberry! Cranberry explosion! No, it’s not a cocktail. It’s what happens to Gus’s rental car when Shawn goes after the man who shot his father. Lassiter rigs some explosives to scare the men outside the place the man is hiding, and unfortunately, Gus parks his car right on top of them. He also ate some bits of Orange Chicken that Shawn laced with ipecac to send to the bad guys, causing him to vomit.
Fortunately, Henry lives, though he’s hooked up to all kinds of monitors and tubes in the hospital for most of the episode. However, Shawn goes on the offensive after Henry is taken in to the hospital and he starts hunting down the shooter.
A Lethal Weapon moment with a landmine under a sofa, a few fake accents and phony disguises, and Juliette to the rescue once again, and the dirty ex-cop/Henry’s shooter gets what’s coming to him.
So glad this show is back. I was really upset for months there after they took way too long to bring the new season back, especially after leaving off on such a cliffhanger as Henry getting shot! But, the Slumber Party marathon a couple weeks ago reminded me that this show is too funny not to forgive them for the extended hiatus. I’m just glad they’re back, even if it is at the same time as The Americans.
Fortunately, they’re both on cable, so they both have encores and I don’t have to sacrifice one for the other, though Chicago Fire and Nashville will end up taking the hit there in the coming weeks.
The Americans
The scariest part of this episode? Elizabeth gets the belt when she goes to bed with a man she’s trying to get information from. Initially, it just starts out a little rough, but then he starts in with the spanking, and then he pulls out the belt, and then he’s about to use the buckle when she starts screaming to get him to stop.
So this isn’t rape, exactly–she’s a spy and does it semi-willingly–but the abuse is right up there with things I don’t like to see. I know it’s only television, but this type of abuse really upsets me compared to other types of TV violence. It really upset Philip too–when he notices the welts on Elizabeth’s back, he’s ready to go shoot the bastard.
‘I don’t need you to fight my battles for me,’ she says.
‘What do you think husbands are supposed to do?’ he replies.
He doesn’t end up going out after the man, but you better believe if he ever comes across this guy face to face, or if Elizabeth comes home with any more belt marks, that guy is going to be dead.
“Granny” seems to know that something happened to Elizabeth during one of her recent assignments, and they get onto the discussion of women’s rights. She compares American women to Russian women, and scolds them for waiting for the law, instead of standing up and taking the rights that belong to them.
Elizabeth is also worrying about Philip’s new friendship with their FBI neighbor, Stan. She worries that he might be getting in too deep, forming a personal relationship rather than a professional one.
I find the relationship between Nina and Stan particularly interesting, and it evolves further in this episode. He’s been using her to gain intelligence on some Russian diplomats or agents, and because of her good looks and her cultural/ethnic connection, she’s able to gain access to the type of information American intelligence agents only dream about.
However, when she tells Stan that she had sex to get the information he requested, he seems unduly upset. It’s pretty clear that he’s not interested in his wife anymore, but were he to engage in a relationship with a Russian woman, because of the type of work he’s in, he’d probably be in some pretty hot water.
1600 Penn
The First Family gets back to nature! Dale and Skip are dealing with some doubts, Emily takes Xander and Marigold on a hike, and Rebecca tries to humanize a little. Not as funny as usual–the fish out of water thing doesn’t really work well here. Bring back Bruce Campbell! 😛
I don’t know–I like the comedy mixed in with the politics. Scandal has the dirt, the sex, and the ugly side of politics, and 1600 Penn is a good alternative to show that the system and at least some of the people in it aren’t all that bad.
BONUS: While watching The Americans, I saw the first TV spot for this new film called Olympus Has Fallen, starring Morgan Freeman, and a few other favs like Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Cole Hauser! It’s an all-star cast in here with other familiar faces like Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Radha Mitchell, and Robert Forster as well. This is the official trailer here, but trust me, check out the TV spots, because the one I saw was way better than this. I couldn’t find the one I saw (I seem to remember more Gerard Butler in that one), but they’re pretty intense.
