Oscar Night 2013: Here’s to the Losers

25 February 2013 by Jess

So, the Life of Pi. That’s pretty much the only movie that won anything the entire night.

Seriously, I was pretty ticked about this. Ben Affleck got stiffed on pretty much everything–Argo won editing and writing, but Alan Arkin was robbed.

I couldn’t believe Anna Karenina didn’t get nominated more, let alone didn’t win anything more. I know it wasn’t super popular because it’s based on such a LONG book, but Keira Knightley is a goddess and that movie looked incredible. I figured, costumes and make-up at the very least!

Ang Lee–Winner: Best Director | The Life of Pi was a
BIG winner tonight.

Anne Hathaway, Winner: Best Supporting Actress for
Les Miserables

Les Mis won a few things, including Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway. I know a lot of people don’t like her because she’s a little “exuberant” shall we say, but she really gave a beautiful, heartfelt speech, and while I haven’t seen the latest Les Mis remake, I’m sure she was great in it.

Photo from Oscars 2013, Quentin Tarantino

Tarantino and his date, Winner: Best Screenplay, Django Unchained

At least Tarantino won for best screenplay. Hells to the yeah. Tarantino deserves it, and I’m so glad to see him finally come out on top again for the first time since Pulp Fiction. He once again looked like he was on coke giving his speech, but that’s just the way he talks.

It was awesome to see Christoph Waltz win again–he truly deserved that one. He was incredible in Django Unchained and I probably would have cried if he hadn’t won. He was simply brilliant in that film.

Jennifer Lawrence: Winner-Best Actress, Silver Linings Playbook

Jennifer Lawrence–WOW. I don’t think she really expected to win–I was thinking Jessica Chastain was the favorite there, but she was beautiful and deserving and incredibly well-spoken, despite the trip-up on the stairs on the way up.

Adele: Performed “Skyfall” from the latest Bond movie of the same name; Winner: Best Original Song, “Skyfall”

The performances were great–Seth MacFarlane singing, Shirley Bassey sounded awesome fifty years after Goldfinger, Catherine Zeta-Jones looked amazing singing “All that Jazz,” Adele with “Skyfall,” the Les Mis cast. All of it was by far some of the best performances at the Oscars I’ve seen in years. On top of that, the orchestra was incredible! I loved all the old scores from movies past, The Godfather, ET, Titanic, and plenty of others.

Photo from Oscars 2013, Daniel Day Lewis and Steven Spielberg

Daniel Day Lewis and Steven Spielberg: Winner: Day Lewis for Best Actor, Lincoln

Daniel Day Lewis–so glad he won. If Lincoln came away without any of the major categories, I would have seriously lost it. And what a lovely speech he gave, along with the entertaining joke with Meryl Streep (his award’s presenter). I got a little nervous he’d be played off (Jaws music was the ditty of the night for that, HIlarious 🙂 but he made it in under the wire. Spielberg got robbed, though.

Photo from Oscars 2013, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner: Winner: Ben Affleck for Argo, Best Picture

ARGO WINS BEST PICTURE! Ben got shafted on the director nom this year, so I was so pleased to see Ben get up there tonight. His speech was a little rushed, partially because he was about to be played off, but I think partially because he was about to cry. I wished George Clooney could have spoken at the speech acceptance as well, but I know they ran over on time.

It was also pretty cool to see the First Lady co-present the award for Best Picture with Jack Nicholson. A first, and a pretty incredible one at that.

I hope they ask Seth MacFarlane back again next year. I’ve been watching the Oscars for about ten or twelve years now, almost every year, and I have to say this was BY FAR the best show I’ve seen. I’ve seen great acceptance speeches, I’ve seen great musical performances, I’ve seen beautiful people, beautiful clothes, and beautiful, incredible films over the years, but this was definitely the best Oscars in years.

As upset and disappointed as I was to see the Life of Pi overwhelm so many categories, there were a few silver linings (pun intended) and some great, well-deserved wins as well.

I won’t say anything about fashion, because that’s not really what this blog is about, but may I say, Naomi Watts, WOW.

About the Blog

This is a place to share my love and excessive fandom of film, actors, and television. I gush a lot, and I complain a lot, usually not simultaneously.

I share my take on the latest movies I’ve seen (some new, some new to me, and some classics that are worth a rewatch), and a little promotion here and there for shows or films that I feel deserve a little more attention than they’re getting.

So, kick back, settle in, switch on, tune in, or whatever you have to do and join in on the love for all things that move on-screen.
