The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Episode 22: Captain America Edition

4 April 2014 by Jess

I have been waiting for this movie FOREVER! I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like Chris Evans, and there are probably even fewer who might harbor any resentment for his costar in the Winter Soldier, Robert Redford. Redford is an American film icon – he even has his own film festival. He has starred alongside so many incredible actors over the years, trying to enumerate the whole list is a major undertaking. Although he is of a different generation than Kevin Bacon, Redford’s legacy and ability is just as relevant now as it was forty years ago.

Robert Redford

I’m not sure Redford has made a bad movie. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Natural, All the Presidents Men, The Sting, Out of Africa, The Horse Whisperer, Three Days of the Condor – all wonderful films, iconic. The man has had one hell of a career, and I have no doubt there will be a few more winners in his repertoire in the years to come. But, he brings us to our next connection through a 1996 film called Up Close and Personal, a story about a TV journalist who makes it big, in which he played alongside one of Hollywood’s best leading ladies…

Michelle Pfeiffer! Pfeiffer is one of those beautiful, incredible actresses that we can’t help but adore. She can play a hardass and she can play a sweetheart, but we love her no matter what. She has had quite a career herself, getting to know Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, Al Pacino, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and the next man on our list…

Sean Penn! If you love the Beatles, I know you saw I Am Sam, just one of the films Penn has done that’s been nominated for an Oscar. Pfeiffer played an attorney for Penn’s character Sam, a Beatles-fanatic father with mental illness trying to retain custody of his daughter Lucy, played by Dakota Fanning. It’s a wonderful film, and if you haven’t seen it, hunt it down and check it out. I dare you not to cry. The next film is one Penn actually won the Oscar for, which was Mystic River, a role in which he played a Boston-based mobster who seeks revenge after his daughter goes missing. I think you know where that brings us to…

Kevin Bacon! Again, I had to go with Mystic River, but it was fun to get there by way of Michelle Pfeiffer, n’est-ce pas?

Results: 2 degrees of separation!

Because of Redford’s long career, I had a half a dozen different ways to do this one, and I really wanted to work in Tequila Sunrise with the Michelle Pfeiffer connection because I fucking love that movie – despite the awful 80s music score – but then I remembered another movie she did, this time with Penn, and I had to cut the festivities shorter in favor of the better connection.

By the way, if you ever see a way to pare down the degrees of separation and point out how to connect the actor in question to Kevin Bacon through fewer connections, leave a comment and prove your movie buff prowess!

About the Blog

This is a place to share my love and excessive fandom of film, actors, and television. I gush a lot, and I complain a lot, usually not simultaneously.

I share my take on the latest movies I’ve seen (some new, some new to me, and some classics that are worth a rewatch), and a little promotion here and there for shows or films that I feel deserve a little more attention than they’re getting.

So, kick back, settle in, switch on, tune in, or whatever you have to do and join in on the love for all things that move on-screen.
