New Girl 1/21
It’s Jess’s birthday, and while she wants to keep things low-key, Nick has a huge surprise for her. She actually doesn’t want to keep things low-key, but history has taught her that she has way too many expectations of people when it comes to her birthday, so it’s best if she just goes to the movies and avoids people so she doesn’t get her hopes up too high.
However, Nick knows this about her and uses it to his advantage. He plans a big surprise party for her, with everybody playing their parts and helping out. Despite a cake pick-up error, and a seemingly unplanned day with her, the surprise turns out just like it’s supposed to.
The feels came through pretty hard on this one. Nick is usually the guy you can’t count on, but he really pulled it together here, and it was super-sweet.
Trophy Wife 1/21
When Bert loses his first tooth, and Pete subsequently loses the tooth and tries to substitute it with one of Warren’s that he still has, Jackie starts a battle, taking away some of the things Pete wanted to do with Bert since she took this away from him.
Hillary has her first sleepover, and while she and Diane have this fancy plan in place, she realizes that the girls had been expecting something a little more casual. She feels bad having to cut her mom out of it, but Diane plays along.
Kate tries to help Warren get a girl he likes, and she takes it way too far. Warren has no idea what he’s doing, and doesn’t even realize the girl he likes is gay until she tells him, but hopefully he’s at least made a new friend, even if it’s not a new girlfriend.
The Tomorrow People
Steven and his mom and brother head out camping with the new guy his mom is dating, and though at first, he thought the boyfriend was one of the Tomorrow People, he realizes that it’s probably his brother who is breaking out, and not the boyfriend. Which means he made some really drastic decisions, and possibly got on the guy’s bad side for a long time to come. Even if this guy didn’t try to block Steven out of his head, I have a feeling he’s going to be more of an obstacle than a help.
Astrid is auditioning for school, and since Steven’s hyper-competitve partner at Ultra is onto him, he is worried about her safety. He sends in John to protect her, and John goes all out, even taking a bullet for her. I sense a little romance there, seeing as John and Cara are on the outs and Astrid knows her feelings for Steven are unrequited.
Since John can’t teleport out after his injury, Cara has to make some bold decisions to come in after them. She succeeds, but just barely. Astrid is not crazy about her new underground life, and she’s stuck there until Steven thinks it’s safe again. This seems to be the worst side effect of Steven trying to remain in contact with his old life. So far, nothing too bad has happened to his friends or family as a result of his powers and his connection to the other Tomorrow People and Ultra, but now, he may have ruined his best friend’s life if he can’t get her back out into the world again.
Chicago PD
While I do like the show, I’m going to take this one out of the line-up for a while. The new characters (as opposed to the crossovers from Chicago Fire) still need some time to develop more backstories and history, and I don’t want to just talk about the cases. The people behind them are what make a show interesting and right now, the people behind are not interesting enough and don’t have enough going on to justify keeping the show on the list.
On top of that, this one is triple-booked Wednesday nights airing at the same time as Nashville and The Tomorrow People, so for now, I think it’s best to cut it from here. If I start having something more to say about it, I’ll add it back in sometime after the Olympics.
