These three are from 1/7/14, all episodes that weren’t available until this week, and which I was just now able to get to.
New Girl
This was mostly a flashback episode with Jess, Nick, and Schmidt’s memories composing the bulk of the story as Jess tries to decide whether to take a job with a non-profit and leave her teaching job.
At first, she finds evidence that she hasn’t been that great of a teacher, but after listening to some of the stories, and a throwback from how she and Cece met, she realizes that she loves teaching and wants to stay with it.
It was pretty entertaining watching Schmidt become a salesman, and how Nick got through law school just long enough to figure out he wanted to be a bartender instead.
It is frustrating that this overlaps with Justified, because sometimes it’s good to visit your friends, and the people on this show feel like friends after three seasons. It’s also frustrating that I now have to wait 8 days to watch an episode, but I’m just going to have to get over that. Just not soon.
Trophy Wife
Poor Pete – he thinks his birthday is cursed. Kate is convinced he’s exaggerating and wants to give him a great birthday – it is the big 5-0, after all!
However, despite her best intentions, the day quickly spirals out of control. Kate’s plan to surprise him in nothing but a trenchcoat backfires as first she also surprises his colleagues, and then she surprises him a little too much and he loses his concentration and rear-ends a cop – only to discover his license is also expiring today.
A long trip to the DMV, a rented Ferrari, and a failed driving test later, Kate finally gives in and doesn’t want to celebrate his birthday anymore. She wanted him to feel young and sexy on his birthday, but after discussing it, she sort of likes that she enjoys aging and family life.
The kids, Diane, and Jackie spend the entire episode trying to get Pete something for his birthday, but Jackie discovers that Diane doesn’t know how to relax and the kids teach Bert that lobsters aren’t pets, and everything he likes to eat used to be alive, too. A loss of innocence, but he comes out ok – since nobody knows where baloney comes from, what sort of meat is in it, he decides that it’s ok to eat.
Killer Women
First off, best part, Marc Blucas with a beard. It is really hard to say no to Marc Blucas with a beard. But I’m still gonna. Because the chick in this show is not worthy.
Basically, it’s Walker, Texas Ranger with a female lead. And not a very believable one at that. Molly Parker is a Texas Ranger and she’s supposed to be all skilled at interrogation and detective work, but the acting could use some work. The plot was a little weak, and the writing is in dire need of an editor.
It’s entertaining enough, being yet another cop show, but overall, it’s just a little too blah, a little too been-there-done-that, and the acting is just painful at times. You can throw as many pretty people as you want into a show, but it isn’t always enough. Here, it isn’t even close, Blucas aside.
