Who the hell is running this outfit? Winners, gaffes and fun moments from the 2014 Golden Globes

What a night! I love the Golden Globes because the atmosphere is always so relaxed and people will have a few drinks, get a little loose, and forget that they’re professionals.

While I want to go over a few highlights from the night, I want to mention quite a few gaffes as well! The announcer announced the wrong presenter when Drew Barrymore came out. Jonah Hill and his fellow presenter had the wrong text on the teleprompter when they came out and had to be given a paper print-out to read. Whoever did the seating arrangements failed big time because for the first four or five awards, nearly everybody was in the back of the room and they wasted valuable air time just waiting for the winners to get up to the damn stage! Holy crow, what a mess!

It seemed like the music they used to play people off to wrap up their speeches was the theme music for the night. I don’t think more than a handful of people made it off the stage without getting played off. I think the initial culprit was Jacqueline Bisset: she threw everybody off because she was SO unprepared to win and took forever with her speech and then as a result, they had to play almost everybody off the rest of the show. I was surprised they didn’t let some of these actors ramble a bit, time issue or not – who the hell has the balls to play off Michael Douglas?

The Good Bits

However, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were hilarious, and the bits the presenters did were pretty good, too, for the most part.

There’s not as much “performing” at the Globes as there is at the Oscars, so it was pretty much a straight presenting show, but they still fell behind time. It seemed that only a few people (like, maybe less than five?) had prepared any remarks or speeches, and everybody who won seemed totally nervous and had to scramble to remember who to thank!

On the one hand, bravo, Hollywood Foreign Press for not giving Meryl Streep another award and spreading the love to a few newcomers and divvying up the awards among a variety of films instead just a few select ones. On the other, maybe they should try to seat people who are nominated more towards the front? I know the space is limited, but seriously!

It was also fun to see our dear friend, Kevin Bacon, come out to introduce Miss Golden Globes, his daughter! The Following wasn’t nominated for anything (which is a crying shame), but he still got to show up on behalf of his daughter, so that was cool.

I thought it was really lovely having Diane Keaton appear to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award on behalf of Woody Allen. I think they tried to play her off, too, but only for a moment, and she really did a wonderful tribute to Allen. I think that dude must work non-stop because I seem to remember him winning another award last year or the year before and not being there to accept it either!

The biggest wins for me were for Jon Voight in Ray Donovan. He really earned that one, and I was so glad to see him get up and accept that. It really is a terrific show, and to see him on a series playing such a meaty role is a real treat. Congrats, sir.

Also, seeing Andy Samberg win for Brooklyn Nine-Nine was unprecedented. Seth Meyers was presenting, and he was so excited for his former SNL castmate when he won, which was adorable to see. Andy Samberg played it totally cool accepting his award, but it’s a first, and certainly well-deserved. The show also won for best comedy series, and the cast and crew were positively tickled to get up there and accept the award. It’s their first season and to win right out of the gate has to feel awesome.

Also, Robin Wright won for House of Cards! I loved this series from Netflix, and I had been hoping for a win, and Robin Wright definitely earned it. She gave a funny, heartfelt speech, and despite a little sideboob, hers was one of the few seemingly at least somewhat prepared speeches of the night! I’m looking forward to season 2 which drops Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14th!

Breaking Bad had a great night as well, as did Dallas Buyers Club and American Hustle, and while some projects were nominated quite a bit, they didn’t win very much, or at all.

In any case, in spite of the gaffes, it was a fun night and it went by in no time. Of course, that might have been because I was working on editing old posts for the new blog. It’s coming along! I still have a good bit of work to do before we switch over from here to the new URL, but I have made leaps and bounds this past week. I think I may have to put it away for a bit this week because I’m way behind on posts here, and then there’s also that book I’m trying to edit. Plus my reading challenges. Good grief, no wonder I have no time for anything!

Here are a few of the big winners from the 2014 Golden Globes (plus a few of my favorites):

About the Blog

This is a place to share my love and excessive fandom of film, actors, and television. I gush a lot, and I complain a lot, usually not simultaneously.

I share my take on the latest movies I’ve seen (some new, some new to me, and some classics that are worth a rewatch), and a little promotion here and there for shows or films that I feel deserve a little more attention than they’re getting.

So, kick back, settle in, switch on, tune in, or whatever you have to do and join in on the love for all things that move on-screen.
