Brooklyn Nine-Nine
First of all, congrats to Andy Samberg and the rest of the cast and crew for winning 2 Golden Globes Sunday night! They deserve it!
Peralta and Diaz are after a car thief, one who only steals Pontiacs, aka the Pontiac Bandit. They get a lead, but in order to follow up on it, the guy (Craig Robinson, whom you may recognize from Knocked Up, Pineapple Express) has to visit his mother and wants them to pretend he’s a business man and not a criminal for her sake.
They play along, but as the man continues to lead them to the thief, they realize that he had set them up. The description of the car thief they had was purposely fake as his cover, and the lead they had was actually the thief.
The captain is trying to find a home for three puppies. While Santiago wants to suck up and take them, she is super-allergic. Terry also can’t take them, saying his twins would make life hell for the puppies, and he can’t do that to the poor dogs.
After taking a bullet on the job, Boyle returns in a cast, on a segway sort of vehicle with a back-up alert, and out of uniform. The rest of the department tries to take it easy on him and be extra nice to him because of his injury, but with the Sudanese food, dropping things into his cast, and having the sergeant help him in the bathroom, he has become even more of a pain in the ass than usual and they all retreat to the evidence locker to avoid him.
The Captain shames them all into being good colleagues again, and finally figures out a place for the puppies: they can go home Boyle.
Chicago PD
I don’t know what these critics are whining about–I liked it! The viewers apparently did too–NBC is already airing commercials touting an 11 million viewer debut.
We all know Sergeant Hank Voight, Detective Jay Halstead and Detective Antonio Dawson. They all had recurring appearances on Chicago Fire. Voight was the dirty cop going after Severide and Casey. Antonio is Dawson’s brother, and Halstead is the undercover cop Dawson was dating a few months ago.
Now these cops are in an intelligence unit, with Voight at the head, figuring out how to bring down some of the worst criminals Chicago has seen. In addition to these three, we have Sophia Bush playing Detective Erin Lindsay, Patrick John Flueger playing officer Adam Ruzek, Elias Koteas playing Detective Alvin Olinsky, and a couple more newcomers.
First off, congrats to Sophia Bush for landing another regular series, one that’s almost a given to be a hit. I can almost buy her being a cop, and while there’s something about her I’ve always liked, she really isn’t as good an actress as say, Mariska Hargitay. Still, she’s not bad and I love strong female characters, so I’ll give her a break on this one.
I love the guy playing Officer Ruzek, a kid out of the academy that Alvin Olinsky picks up to help out with an operation–the guy is a loose cannon, in a totally fun and entertaining way.
This episode centers on a Columbian who is cutting people’s heads off, with his hands in drugs and crime all over the city–they call him the Octopus. Or rather, the Spanish word for Octopus that I can’t quite remember, pupol, maybe?
It looks like it’s going to be a fun show, even if it is a little typical. It’s a cop show–I don’t really expect them to try anything too new especially from a guy who’s created multiple successful television series over the past two decades. What I like is how they show the dirty, corrupt side of the PD as well as the honest, by-the-skin-of-their-teeth side. And even if guys like Voight do things a little dirty or throw out the book from time to time, they seem not to be complete jerks–Voight has been helping kids get out of a life of crime, including Detective Lindsay at
And, just to remind you where it all started, we get a quick cameo from Herrmann, Otis, and Dawson from Chicago Fire, just to tie things together.
Unfortunately, this airs at the same time as Psych, so I will be watching Psych (mainly because not all of the episodes are guaranteed to show up on Hulu the next day, unlike NBC shows at the present time), but if Psych isn’t your thing or if you’re like me and want to watch Chicago PD next day on Hulu or NBC’s website, by all means. It’s a decent show if you like cop shows, and it’s a fun take on the typical PD show because it focuses on an intelligence gathering unit instead of the usual homicide department.
Parenthood
A little bit of a wrap-up on the Amber/Ryan engagement fiasco. Though she’s still angry at him, Zeek convinces her to at least say goodbye to Ryan before he heads back for another tour.
Sarah, with the help of her new doctor friend Carl, goes up against Hank for a photography job, and while she gets the job, she realizes she is a little under-prepared to be able to do a good job with it, so she asks Hank to do the job with her, except that she’s the one in charge this time. Could this be the start of a rekindled romance? Or just a more solid start to a beautiful friendship? With Carl in the mix, I’m guessing it’s the latter, but you never know with Sarah.
Max is having trouble at school, again, as his best friend no longer wants to hang out with him because he’s found new friends in his newfound love of basketball. Adam tries to help him work things out, but it’s no use. So, Adam, Kristina and Max go to a basketball game together.
Joel and Julia are really having a hard time. Joel’s marriage worries are starting to affect him at work, and when he mentions it to Pete, she tells him straight up, get it together. Julia tries to talk through things with Joel, telling him the truth about her kiss with Ed, and discussing the possibility of going to couples therapy.
But Joel can’t handle an extramarital kiss, not something he can forgive, and he doesn’t think they can work things out by going to therapy. Julia is the problem, he says, and until she works through her problems and goes back to the person she was before she left her job, they haven’t got a shot.
I still think Joel is overreacting. Yeah, Julia and Ed kissed, but even if she wanted it at the time, she did put a stop to and she did tell Ed to back off. Yeah, she also lied about it initially, but because it didn’t mean anything to her, she didn’t want Joel to get too upset about it. I’m not sure they’re going to come through this. I don’t know what that means. If Joel will leave the show. If they do split up, I think it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the end of the Ed and Julia relationship.
There’s also a thing where the lead singer of the Luncheonette’s band stays with Crosby and Jasmine for a couple days while he’s fighting with his band, but I didn’t find that to be that interesting, except that Jasmine gives the guy some advice and he writes her a song. That was nice.
Elementary
After working with one of the other detectives in Gregson’s unit, Nash, and having a hard time communicating with him, Holmes gets upset and requests that Gregson take on more casework in order for them to be able to work with him instead of some of the other people in his unit.
Holmes (regarding Nash): This chair would be a more suitable collaborator.
Watson: He’s not wrong.
When a mafia murder pops up in the Bronx, Holmes and Watson’s paths cross Detective Bell’s once again. Even though the body doesn’t have hands, a face, or teeth to be able to identify it, Watson reveals a hobby of hers from her childhood, and she is able to identify the body as Handsome Bobby, a mobster she recalls from her youth.
While Holmes continues to push Bell into forgiving him and pushing Bell to continue his rehab so he can do more than push papers and analyze data, Bell still rejects Holmes’s attempts and wants more space to do his own thing.
Holmes even goes so far as to find that Bell’s new boss is a dirty cop, and though Bell thinks it’s just another ploy to get them to work together again, he looks into it and discovers that Holmes was right.
Bell realizes that Sherlock was only trying to help him, and he transfers back to Gregson’s unit. It may still be a while before Bell can carry a weapon, but I, like Sherlock, have faith that he will return to full health again with some time and more work. The human body is resilient.
Up next:
Recaps from Friday night’s Enlisted, Five-0 and Dracula are coming soon enough. With the Globes Sunday, I missed Revenge again this week. I’ll catch up eventually. However, the episode from last week is up now, so I’ll try to get that in with the Friday recaps.
As to the upcoming viewing schedule, a few other shows return this week, so it’s a packed week!
Monday, Almost Human, How I Met Your Mother, 2 Broke Girls (I think), and Sleepy Hollow are all back with new episodes.
Tuesday, Agents of SHIELD, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Justified, Chicago Fire, New Girl, Trophy Wife, and Killer Women are new.
Wednesday, Psych and American Horror Story: Coven are back with new episodes, along with the return of the Tomorrow People and Nashville, as well as the season premiere of Men at Work on TBS!
Thursday, I believe The Crazy Ones is a repeat, but The Michael J. Fox Show, Parenthood, and Elementary all look to be back with new episodes. It looks like ABC pulled the Assets for Shark Tank. May I just say, bahahaha 🙂 That’s what you get for getting greedy, jerks 😛
And Friday, we have new eps of Enlisted, Five-0 and Dracula.
Have a good week! I’ll be back here soon with more recaps!
