Recaps from last week’s episode of the Crazy Ones and Monday night’s new episode of Almost Human are coming, but first, I have to complain and make you aware of ABC’s new inconvenient format:
I’ve said before I have no problem with having to sign in with my TV provider. I get it. I get it more for cable and premium channels that you actually have to pay for, not network channels that you can get free with a digital converter box, but I get it. Fine. What I don’t get is WHY they don’t have all the major TV providers available. This is probably some corporate or technical BS that I am just unfamiliar with, but still, they have a tiny market like Google Fiber as option and they don’t have an enormous market like DirecTV? WTF. So you know what? I’m glad a bunch of my ABC shows are off until the end of February and March. At least I won’t have to deal with this (much) until then.
The Crazy Ones
Sydney gets hooked on a video game, trying to fall in love with what she’s trying to sell like Simon told her to, while the guys get hooked on the cosmetics and skincare products from another new client.
Though resistant at first, Sydney throws herself headlong into the new video game and gets hooked to the point of ignoring her hygiene, bodily functions, and more, worrying both her dad and the rest of the gang.
Simon finally comes through with the right way to get through to her, saying she isn’t addicted to the game, she’s addicted to winning, which is probably his fault since he let her win at everything when she was a kid. However, though it got a little hairy there for a while, the process gets them to a great pitch and they win the new clients over.
The zen people on the other hand seemed a little dismayed at Andrew’s accidental face mask mix–which burned off some of his skin–so that one’s more of a wait and see. However, Zach was determined to have the softest hands, so the whole thing wasn’t a complete loss.
Almost Human
Dorian needs some time off to recharge, but John rationalizes he’d rather have a half-charged version of Dorian than one of the more uptight bots on the force. The results are a moodier, somewhat Tourette’s syndrome-afflicted version of Dorian, with him losing his temper and chewing people out for little or no reason. In spite of this, he is still able to do his job.
The guys are on the hunt for a guy who straps a bomb to random (or perhaps not so random) people, orders them around, and threatens to blow them up if they disobey. The kicker is, it’s all on video, live-broadcasted online and the killer is obsessed with his viewership. The first victim Dorian and John are unable to save, but the second one, a girl who went out with the bomber once, they are able to save in just the nick of time. Frustrated but not deterred, the bomber goes after John and tries to cut him off from those who might be able to save him. His ratings go through the roof, but John still finds a way to escape and bring the guy down.
This isn’t a new idea–I think I remember seeing it on Law and Order: SVU a few years back, and the horror movie genre loves to use this plot. While Almost Human took it up a notch just a smidge because of the futuristic tech, it was a less than brilliant opening to their post-winter break premiere.
Up next:
Agents of SHIELD is back Tuesday night, along with the season premiere of Justified, a new episode of Chicago Fire, and new episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, and Trophy Wife. The new show Killer Women also debuts on ABC.
I am not entirely sure which of these shows overlap, but I believe Justified airs in the middle time slot, at the same time as New Girl and Trophy Wife, and I think you can guess which one I’m going to go with there, and I believe Killer Women airs in the latest time slot, competing with Chicago Fire. Check your local listings to find out what’s on when in your area.
Since I’m not too keen on giving ABC any help with their ratings at the moment, I think I’m going to stick with my firemen and the more viewer-friendly NBC on this one. If I can watch Killer Women on Hulu next week (as I assume all their shows have gone to an 8-day time release delay), I will and I’ll recap it then, but in the meantime, I’m sticking with a show I already know I like instead of taking a chance on one that looks a little hokey, in my opinion.
