I went out at 10:30 Thursday night and saw the new Marvel movie, Thor: The Dark World. Spoiler alert, it was AWESOME 🙂 So, with our favorite defender of Earth and demi-god in residence in the movies this week, I thought I’d feature the man behind the hero, Chris Hemsworth, in this week’s episode of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Episode 19
Chris Hemsworth
Hemsworth is awesome, and not just because he’s annoyingly good-looking (I tell you, those Aussies breed for beauty!). Not only did he prove himself to the man himself, Joss Whedon, in a little horror flick called Cabin in the Woods, but he squared off with Anthony Hopkins in the first Thor film (as well as the new one), and put some serious heat on both Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in The Avengers. It was in this movie that he met our first connection. I’ll give you a hint: he’s always angry.
Mark Ruffalo! In The Avengers, Ruffalo took on the role of the Incredible Hulk, and for the first time in a decade of three (all extremely talented) men playing the character, NAILED IT! (I credit the source material and Whedon largely, but you gotta hand it to the man for humanizing such a terrifying character) Ruffalo has a rich history of awesome characters, from rom-coms like View from the Top and 13 Going on 30 to grittier, more serious roles in movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Collateral. It was in a movie that came out somewhat recently, called The Kids are All Right, where he met our next connection…
Julianne Moore! Moore played a lesbian mother of two alongside her partner, played by Annette Bening, in The Kids Are All Right, but ends up having an affair with their sperm donor, played by the scruffy but always lovable Ruffalo. Moore has always been a very versatile actress, taking on serious and comedic roles, and she’s amazing at both. It was in a slightly more comedic role, as you may remember, where she met our dear friend…
Kevin Bacon! Once again, we come to the man through his role in Crazy, Stupid, Love as David Lindhagen, but wasn’t it fun getting to throw Mark Ruffalo into this mix? <3
Results: 2 degrees of separation!
Wow! I had a hard time with this one, but mostly it was in choosing which direction to go! I had a way from Hemsworth to Bacon with his Thor costar Natalie Portman, his Avengers costar Scarlett Johansson, and his Cabin the Woods costar Richard Jenkins, but I love Mark Ruffalo. Then, I realized I had three ways from Ruffalo to Bacon: the one I chose above, his role in Collateral with Tom Cruise, and his role in Rumor Has It… with Jennifer Aniston! Anyway, hope you had as much fun as I did piecing this one together!

By the way, if you ever see a way to pare down the degrees of separation and point out how to connect the actor in question to Kevin Bacon through fewer connections, leave a comment and prove your movie buff prowess!
