These are a little later than anticipated. Here’s why: In case you weren’t visiting me last year on the blog, I’d like to refer you to this post: Warning: Writers on the Rampage wherein I explain the temporary insanity I go through once a year in November to participate in National Novel Writing Month, aka NaNoWriMo.
As much as I love this blog, all my fictional friends on my shows, and you visiting and hearing what I have to say about them, I am first and foremost a writer, and I love participating in NaNoWriMo. So, I prioritize that for one month a year (and sometimes a couple other times to a lesser extent for Camp NaNoWriMo).
Since a lot of shows take breaks during November for holidays, I don’t expect there to be an overwhelming backlog, but I will do my best to post recaps and updates here when I have time. That said, you should expect delays. I hope you’ll stick with me!
Elementary
After going through the current caseload at the police department, Sherlock feels he needs something more challenging. He and Watson take on a murder case involving a former Polish bratva member (read: mob) whom they suspect of killing someone. But without a victim, their job just got harder.
Their initial search leads them to a contractor building a senior care facility for the former mobster, who has transitioned into quite a normal and productive role since he’s been in the States, but it comes up a dead end. After going in circles a couple times, they discover the true culprit.
Meanwhile, Watson has a friend searching for a past one-night stand and she agrees to help. However, it isn’t until later she realizes it’s Holmes that she’s been pursuing, and while she isn’t happy with his answer as to why he never got back in touch with her friend after their tryst, she’s able to convince her friend that Holmes is one of the worst people to try to have a relationship with.
Grey’s Anatomy
When a man comes in with a broken ankle, but his x-ray shows he has a massive heart tumor, Ross gets the idea to try something drastic. The man and his wife already knew about the inoperable tumor, and have taken leave of their lives to travel and enjoy themselves in the little time he has left.
But Ross believes that a type of glue used in neurosurgery can be used to repair the hole the tumor would leave once removed. Cristina is just daring enough to try it, and the couple, now in dire financial straits after their travels, hope perhaps he’ll die on the table so the life insurance will cover all they’ve spent. Little do they know what an awesome surgeon Cristina Yang is.
Alex has been visiting a bar where his dad has been playing sets with his band, to sort of get closer to him. When he actually gets a chance to talk to him, he realizes that the old man hasn’t changed. He’s left another family behind just like he left Alex when he was a kid.
Meredith is working hard on research and though Derek has the opportunity to make a breakthrough in his work, he decides that it’s time to give Meredith the space she needs to do her work and make her own breakthroughs. He’s already a renowned neurosurgeon. He doesn’t need to push so hard for his career at present, and he understands that Meredith needs room to establish hers. THIS is why he’s McDreamy. Because he is that Knight in Shining Armor, the only one who can save Meredith from herself.
Arizona has to push Murphy away when she realizes how attached the girl has become, but it seems by the end of the episode, Murphy has grown on her. Or maybe she feels so devoid of friends and people who actually like her in spite of having cheated on her wife that she’s reaching out to anyone who shows the slightest amount of interest.
Cristina’s surgery succeeds, but the news is less than happy for the man and his wife who now have to face their financial irresponsibility much sooner than they’d expected. Cristina also confronts Owen’s new girlfriend, introducing herself as Owen’s ex-wife, not realizing that Owen hasn’t even mentioned that part of his past to his new lady. Though she’s a little hurt, it’s not like she can say anything about it. First of all, it’s not her problem, they’re not married anymore. Second of all, she’s Cristina Yang. She has way too much pride to let him know that not mentioning her to his new girlfriend hurt her feelings.
Parenthood
Max is on the yearbook staff at school, taking photos, but he doesn’t understand that the yearbook’s purpose isn’t to take the best artistic photographs, it’s to take the photographs with the best memories. So he creates a problem when he takes a beautiful photograph of a girl crying with her friends in the hallway. Kristina tries to smooth things over, but the school is determined to put Max on layout where he can’t cause problems.
Joel gets himself into a spot of trouble when he gets drunk on martinis with Pete (his new developer). Julia thinks he’s being taken advantage of, but he think she’s being overbearing and butting in where she doesn’t belong. On the one hand, I agree with Joel. It is his business, it’s his decision how to deal with things, and Julia was being a little pushier than she should have been if she really wanted to have her concerns heard. On the other hand, even if Julia was being pushy, it matters that your spouse feels like their opinions and advice are at least being heard, even if they’re not followed, and Joel should have been more accommodating.
Crosby and Adam argue over their new band on their new label because the lead singer is such a pain in the ass, but Crosby finds a way to get through to the singer and smooth things over with the band and his brother. He pulls out a few great albums, classic albums, and explains how they were made on a shoestring budget. Over-production doesn’t mean better. They can make their album, keep it simple and make it great.
Ryan finally hears what Sarah’s been saying about him, her concerns about the wedding, and while he’s upset at Amber for not telling him sooner, he decides to confront Sarah and explain that he really is a good guy, his family isn’t happy like the Bravermans, and he wants to marry Amber more than anything. Hopefully this means Sarah will lay off Amber and start being excited about this wedding.
Reign
The English arrive at French court and quickly proceed to terrorize Mary. It was they who attempted to poison her at the convent, and they stage another attempted poisoning in her room shortly after their arrival. It turns out the woman who was “poisoned” was in league with the English and didn’t really die, it was only a show to frighten Mary.
Also, we discover that Mary’s would-be rapist is not actually dead. The secretive person who’s been helping Mary, warning her, helps the young man escape. It seems that this person is also in touch with Frances’s younger brother Charles. The way the boy puts it, this person is a bit simple, even childlike, and he calls her Carissa. Mary tries to make contact with the girl again, trying to learn more about who’s plotting against her, but she ends up with more questions than answers.
Week 2, it’s still good, though I didn’t find this episode quite as intriguing as the first. I feel like the queen’s plot against Mary’s marriage to her son is much more interesting than the English’s political gains by Mary’s death. Also, there was not as much of “Bash” (Sebastien) in this episode, which was too bad.
Scandal
Because he won’t stop talking about taking down Command, aka her father, Liv asks Jake to leave. Since Command always knows where he is, it’s not like he’ll be safer anywhere else.
Since the scandal over Liv being the woman the President had the affair with, their business has dried up, but an over-libidinous senator finally brings business back. The senator has not only been sexting outside his marriage, but he’s been accused of murdering one of the women who had been attempting blackmail, and it’s now the Gladiators’ job to prove his innocence.
They succeed, though they have to convince his wife to testify on his behalf. But it isn’t until Liv speaks to the senator about the night of the murder that she realizes the wife wasn’t the senator’s alibi, he was hers. She went after the blackmailer hoping it would put an end to her husband’s perversion, or addiction, but he kept it up. Still, she’s a lawyer, and though she despises his behavior, he didn’t commit murder and she feels obligated to the law that he shouldn’t be falsely imprisoned.
Melly accidentally makes a problematic remark to the a probable female presidential nominee (guest appearance by Lisa Kudrow) and Cyrus has to help her clean up the mess from the backlash. Fitz, for once, takes Melly’s side, but Melly was hoping for a little more comfort from him. When she doesn’t get it, she storms out, much to his bewilderment.
Once Ballard gets some evidence on Command, he confronts Huck with it, hoping they might be able to team up and bring Command down together. Huck goes to Liv, and though she isn’t happy about it, it looks like she might be willing to consider the possibility of helping with their mission.
