Fair warning: I’m headed out for a local Nano event this evening, so I’m going to miss Revenge for sure. I’ll be able to catch the encore of Witches Of East End, but the recaps will probably be later tomorrow than usual.
Hawaii Five-0
Billy and Catherine are out on a stakeout when something goes wrong. Their target gets shot, and both of them take a bullet in the confusion as well. Billy doesn’t make it, and Catherine is determined to find his killer, unwilling to stay in a hospital bed while Five-0 is on the case.
Joe shows up again, and Steve asks him to look into his mom’s whereabouts, but Joe doesn’t get much except that she’s alive.
Kono, still in China, is given a chance to escape when Adam gives himself up, but stubborn girl that she is, she won’t leave without him.
They have a fancy Navy funeral for Billy. With this new change of events, it looks like Steve and Catherine are going to take a break. Not a moment too soon. I don’t know about you, but that woman gets on my nerves. I never bought that she was a SEAL and I never liked her with Steve.
Anyway, considering how little screentime Kono’s had lately, and considering Catherine may be cutting back on hers, I think it’s time for Kono to come back. Break up all the testosterone running rampant at Five-0 HQ.
Dracula
Part of the reason I waited to post this is because I needed to watch it again. I was a little confused the first time I watched it Friday night, and I needed some clarification.
I’ll tell you right now, I am very skeptical and a hardcore purist when it comes to Dracula, and I’m already a little pissed off at NBC’s interpretation of this. That said, literary purism aside, it’s a decent show so far.
The premise is that Dracula has been awoken from his grave and is pretending to be Alexander Grayson, an American entrepreneur in London set on bringing a new form of energy to the world, one counter to the new focus on oil that seems to be sweeping the nation.
During his grand opening/demonstration party, he meets Mina Murray, a medical student, Jonathan Harker, her fiance-to-be, a journalist, Mina’s beautiful, blond friend Lucy, and a few other people who were not in the original book.
Dracula is out for vengeance against the Order of the Dragon, a centuries-old organization that killed his wife and seems to be set on a particular form of world domination. At this juncture, controlling the world’s oil supply and becoming wealthy off it seems to be a big part of it, which is why Grayson is offering an alternative.
The order knows about vampires and has been killing them and keeping their population in check, and when one of their own is killed (by Dracula), they immediately take precautions against him becoming a vampire. They have a particularly busty blond woman on their side, kickass though she may be, Lady Jayne Wetherby, who fights and keeps vamps locked in an iron cage. However, she’s taken a liking to Grayson, not knowing who or what he is–you’d think a professional vampire hunter could tell a vamp when she sees one, but whatever.
The thing that bugs me most is Van Helsing. Much younger than in the book, middle aged rather than elderly, he is Mina’s teacher at medical school. Ok, I can buy it. But apparently, he’s the one who freed Dracula from his grave and is in league with him against the Order of the Dragon who also killed his family.
I can see why their interests align in this story, but in no world is it ok that Van Helsing and Dracula are on the same side. I did appreciate the reference to the book when Van Helsing frees Dracula, “the blood is the life”, but it’s not enough to make up for the fact that they just rewrote one of the best-known and best-loved pieces of literature in history.
Still, I do like Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and the show really is pretty entertaining, loyalty to its source material aside. Also, I’ve got that timeslot free on Fridays, so I plan on sticking with it awhile. I can probably live with the changes to the characters and motives, but I don’t have to be happy about it.
Up next:
Monday night, CBS is all new with How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls. Sleepy Hollow is still off this week, returning November 4.
Tuesday, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl are off this week, along with Agents of SHIELD and Chicago Fire, so it’ll just be Trophy Wife!
Wednesday, Back in the Game, American Horror Story: Coven, and Nashville are all-new. I think The Tomorrow People is also new, but the CWTV website schedule won’t display the upcoming week’s shows until the previous week is COMPLETELY over, i.e. the schedule should update tomorrow (Monday)!
Thursday, OUAT in Wonderland is off, instead showing It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are all new, as well as Reign (I think), Elementary, The Crazy Ones, the Michael J. Fox Show, and Parenthood.
Friday, all new Hawaii Five-0 and Dracula.
Next Sunday, all new Revenge and Witches of East End.
