That title is probably going to be way confusing but it’s what happened! Also, this line-up is different than usual because I lost the battle for the remote to a Colorado/Detroit hockey game, and the only channel I could get in the other room was ABC. The other shows will still be recapped, but not just yet.
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland
Random sidenote: my Galaxy S III keyboard now knows to form the title of this show when I start typing “once”. That’s awesome. Now, if only it could recognize the difference between when I want “now” instead of “more” and “in” instead of “I’m”…
Anyway, though I was a little uncertain last week, after watching this week’s show, I’ll admit I’m a little hooked. The love story is quite lovely, perfect for romantics and secret soap opera fans like me. On soaps, everybody is ridiculously good-looking, and on this show, they’re good-looking, but nowhere near the same level.
And may I say, the Red Queen is one of those villains you love to hate. She’s hardcore, and though she is totally evil, power-hungry and self-interested, she’s a formidable foe for both Alice and Jafar. Unfortunately, the rabbit is playing both sides, but I suspect he’ll come out on the right side at some point.
In this episode, Alice and the Knave are headed to find the genie’s bottle. Jafar wants it too, and knowing this, the Red Queen is on the case as well, but Alice is one step ahead of them. She tells everyone they meet where they’re going, knowing that the only thing you can count on in Wonderland is that nobody can be counted on, and somebody tells Jafar.
However, Alice and the Knave are actually going somewhere else to retrieve the bottle. The only problem is: somebody’s already been there.
The adventure and the fantasy, all is which require green-screen and special effects, are all fun and do a good job bringing such a unique setting to life, but it’s the characters who really make this show fun and engaging.
I love that the rabbit is the one who does some of the narration, appropriately for his character, and awesome because we get to listen to John Lithgow more than his character is actually on the screen 🙂 In any case: Watch this week’s ep and tell me you’re not in love with the queen, villainess or not!
Grey’s Anatomy
Cristina invites Meredith to participate in a very unique surgery in which will they will be doing a liver and heart transplant at the same time. Meredith is really excited about it and trying to catch up with the reading and research involved to be able to perform the surgery, but at the same time, she’s also trying to take care of Zola whom she’s afraid is feeling a little bit left out because of the new baby.
Derek meanwhile has his own super surgery to perform and is a little bit absentee when it comes to putting his daughter, and the all-important tea party they planned, first.
Alex is still struggling with the idea that his father is in the same hospital, and he can’t bring himself to confront him or speak to him or try to make amends at all, even with Jo pushing him to do it.
Arizona is confused about why Murphy is being so friendly, and she’s worried they might have slept together after the drunken night she had with April the night of the gala. It turns out it was entirely innocent, but the night really meant a lot to Murphy who has felt a little isolated at Grey-Sloan, and Murphy is visibly stung that Arizona doesn’t remember it.
Richard is still working on recovering, but it’s slow-going. Jackson’s mom shows up to try and convince him (and his doctors) to put him through his paces. This also creates some momentary drama between her and Stephanie when mom catches her son and his new girlfriend in the on-call room, but Stephanie is a total pro (no pun intended). She’s just like Cristina and spins the situation into a feminist discussion and explains how awesome she is despite how things might have looked in the on-call room.
AND: Callie gets her groove back! After handling a case with a daredevil whose sister was only born to give her replacement parts, Callie realizes she can say no, and she wants to. She asks Arizona to move out of their apartment and she moves back in, and has a dance party in her underwear. Just like when she used to live in the hospital before she married George. Callie got her groove back, and it’s awesome.
Because we all know Cristina is leaving at the end of this season, the professional divergence between her and Meredith and their career priorities isn’t hard to believe here. I see Cristina going on to bigger and better things professionally, and suspect that will be the explanation for her leaving. But, that day is months away!
Scandal
Liv gets caught in the middle of a bomb threat when the mother of a dead soldier accused of terrorism shows up with a live bomb when the government won’t tell her what really happened. She believes her son was murdered by his own government erroneously for crimes he didn’t commit, but can’t get the truth out of anyone, so she goes to Washington and ends up in a room with a congressman and Liv threatening to blow them up if she doesn’t get the truth.
Liv has to negotiate with the bomb squad, the mother, and the president to get the information and get everyone out alive. Fitz tells her the truth, that the woman’s son was CIA and that she can never knew the truth about her son in order to save other American lives, and Olivia has to decide whether those lives are worth more than this woman’s sanity.
Though distraught, the woman seems ready to comply and let everyone go, but the moment Liv makes it out of the room, the woman detonates the bomb, killing herself and the congressman.
It was a pretty heavy episode, to say the least. Hostage sitch and all. Not to mention Huck, who has elected to go after “command” aka Liv’s father. Liv fears the worst, that Huck had killed her father, but he reveals that even though he’s free now, Command still has control and authority over him, whether he likes it or not. After hearing his story, how he felt obligated and manipulated by her father, Olivia worries that Ballard may experience the same misguided sense of loyalty to Command despite being “free” now.
And Melly: she gets drunk when Liv makes it out alive. Fitz thinks she’s drunk because she’s upset that Liv didn’t die in the incident, but Melly knows it’s better that Liv is alive. Had she died, she knows Fitz would have put Liv on an even greater pedestal than he already has, and she wouldn’t want to live with that.
The Crazy Ones and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were just picked up for the rest of the season! Yay! PLUS: Chicago Fire is getting spin-off! It’s called Chicago PD, and will star Dawson’s brother Antonio’s character, along with her new ex-boyfriend, the undercover cop. It will air Wednesday nights beginning in January.
I love spin-offs that come about while both shows are still on air because it means CROSSOVER episodes! Buffy/Angel, Grey’s/Private Practice, etc. Though I plan to check out the new show, I was just talking about how nice it is to have a firefighter show as opposed to another cop show, so I can’t say I am looking forward to another cop show. I do like Antonio’s character on Chicago Fire, so maybe it’ll be good.
AND, this just in: NBC has canceled Ironside and Welcome to the Family. It’s too bad about Ironside, I thought it had potential and decent audience base, but apparently not. As to the comedy, I’m not surprised. I like Mike O’Malley as much as the next schmuck, but the show sounded pretty lame and formulaic, so I decided to skip it. Now if only CBS would get that memo on The Millers…
Up next:
The rest of Thursday recaps, including the CW’s premiere of Reign (spoiler alert: it was kind of great!), and this week’s new episode of Five-0 are coming! Stay tuned!
