Agents of SHIELD
The tech in this one is kind of insane: implanted in (or in place of? wasn’t clear on that) an eyeball, it not only creates clear vision out that eye, but allows a third party to see everything that person sees. Oh, and it can kill the person wearing it if they don’t follow orders.
The implant is being used to control a woman, Akela Amador, and they force her to pull heists, follow people, and do all sorts of things against her will. Fitz and Simmons have to come up with a workaround of the same type of tech so Skye can hack the feed and Ward can use a pair of glasses as if he’s the one with the implant.
The case hits a little close to home for Coulson as Amador used to be a trainee of his. He wants to save her, but the team isn’t so sure she can be saved. May even goes in solo to capture her, expecting to have to take her out.
Not quite as much fun as the origin story and gravity shifting we had last week, but I do love me some Whedon-tech! (Even if it’s Marvel tech, it feels a little Whedony to me, somewhat a la Dollhouse season 1, episode 5: “True Believer.” Watch that ep and then tell me this tech’s not a Whedon brainchild.)
New Girl
Nick comes into a little money after his father’s estate is settled, and can’t wait to start spending irresponsibly. Jess thinks he should use it to pay off debts, including one to Winston, and maybe start a bank account while he’s at it, but Nick doesn’t like the idea of being “molded” against his will.
Schmidt is going more out of his way to be told he’s a good person than to actually be a good person. Business as usual. Single Schmidt is kind of no fun anymore.
Nick realizes that Jess has his best interests at heart, and he realizes that he’ll do anything to hang on to her, so he breaks down and gets a bank account. Sweet moment, followed by not-so-funny bank employee interaction regarding unnecessary fees.
It’d be nice if the writers did something innovating instead of sit on their haunches in a comfy new season. It’s like once they get picked up for season two, so many writers stop trying. Not cool. This show isn’t going to make it on sweet and semi-funny alone for that long. Step it up, Fox. Step it up.
Trophy Wife
Kate’s best friend Meg gets in a fight with her boyfriend and decides to crash at Kate and Pete’s, but her presence causes a little turmoil at the house. She takes Kate away from Pete and the kids and they act like a couple of college kids for a night which ends in a nasty hangover, Meg having eaten part of Hillary’s school project, and thrown up in Warren’s slippers.
Kate realizes she’s gone off the reservation a little, but it seems like she loses her sensibilities a little when she gets together with Meg. She gets a hold on herself and essentially tells her friend to grow up a little–Meg may not be married or have kids, but she’s over 30 and living like she’s still in college. They fight, make up, and balance is restored to Girl World.
Chicago Fire
Shay and Dawson are called to a regular, a diabetic who likes having them visit, to give him insulin, when he pulls out a gun. It’s clear he’s off his rocker a bit, and while Dawson takes the stern, don’t-be-an-asshole approach, Shay tries the sugar-coated approach, against orders, and the guy blows his brains out. Dawson blames Shay, and Shay blames herself, and because of how fond the man was of Shay, she feels even more responsible.
Peter is the one who finally figures out who the rat is, but Kelly’s the one who has to save the arsonist after he sets himself on fire in another dilapidated building in a last ditch effort to hurt the house.
Meanwhile, Kelly’s dad is the one who seems to have a handle on why the budget chick is zeroing in on that house in particular–a dislike of the chief more than an overall problem with the house.
Oh, and there was a really awesome rescue of two-car accident where one is hanging off the edge of a parking garage several stories up and the other is at the bottom on the street, just waiting to have the other car fall on it. It was pretty hardcore.
Even though this show’s gotten a bit routine, some of the rescues really are great, the drama is just right, and it is nice to watch a show about firefighters with so many cop/doctor/forensics shows on these days!
Up next:
Wednesday night, new Back in the Game, AHS: Coven, Nashville, and The Tomorrow People. If I have time, I’ll try to get Tuesday’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine into the line-up!
