The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Episode 16: Scandal Edition

6 October 2013 by Jess

Scandal made its season three fall premiere on Thursday, so I wanted to feature it on this week’s edition of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Kerry Washington has been making movies for a while, but she didn’t start becoming a household name until she gained traction with her role as a “fixer” on the ABC political drama Scandal. It’s a heavy show, with plenty of intrigue, intensity, and of course, scandalous matters that affect the fictional political scene in modern day Washington DC.

Kerry Washington has appeared in various movies and television shows for nearly 20 years. Most recently, we saw her in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained as Broomhilda, Django’s wife, but her career has put her next to a number of incredible actors, from Christoph Waltz and Jamie Foxx to Samuel L. Jackson and Patrick Wilson, to Forest Whitaker and…

Our dear friend, James McAvoy! In The Last King of Scotland, Washington plays one of Idi Amin’s (Forest Whitaker) wives and has an affair with McAvoy’s character, Nicholas Garrigan, resulting in a pregnancy that would spell certain death for both of them. I did see this movie and remember loving it, but I only saw it once when it first came out, and had no idea who Washington was at the time. But you don’t end up in a movie with Forest Whitaker, or McAvoy, for that matter, if you got no skills! McAvoy, as we’ll remember from episode three, the Bombshell edition, has also had some pretty great and iconic roles, including that of Professor Xavier in X-Men: First Class, where we know he met Magneto’s (Michael Fassbender) nemesis, Sebastian Shaw, played by none other than…

Kevin Bacon! Not my favorite of his villainous roles, but definitely a memorable one. The guy can swallow a grenade and absorb bullets!

Results: 1 degree of separation!

Unfortunately, I had to use IMDb to help me get started on Washington’s side. Before Scandal, I had no idea who she was, even though I’d seen her in Lakeview Terrace, The Last King of Scotland, Ray, and a few other movies where she had more minor roles. Now, I’d know her anywhere! Though her previous roles in movies I’ve seen were relatively prominent in terms of screentime, they weren’t especially memorable, which I attribute to being overshadowed by the giants she had to stand next to: Jackson, Whitaker, Foxx. On Scandal, she’s the giant, and the world shall know the name “Olivia Pope” from now on!

By the way, if you ever see a way to pare down the degrees of separation and point out how to connect the actor in question to Kevin Bacon through fewer connections, leave a comment and prove your movie buff prowess!

About the Blog

This is a place to share my love and excessive fandom of film, actors, and television. I gush a lot, and I complain a lot, usually not simultaneously.

I share my take on the latest movies I’ve seen (some new, some new to me, and some classics that are worth a rewatch), and a little promotion here and there for shows or films that I feel deserve a little more attention than they’re getting.

So, kick back, settle in, switch on, tune in, or whatever you have to do and join in on the love for all things that move on-screen.
