ABC Sunday Night: Revenge and Betrayal Premieres

30 September 2013 by Jess

Revenge

This season looks to be interesting. People are leaving and coming back, and there’s an ominous shot of Emily getting shot in the torso and falling from a boat in what appears to be her wedding dress that I suppose would be foreshadowing were it not the image of exactly what’s going to happen at the end of the summer when she and Daniel have set their wedding date, August 8th.

Emily’s already hit Conrad, poisoning his water, but he’s still alive. Only now it appears he’s been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease, which if you ever watched the later seasons of House with Olivia Wilde, you know that’s not a pleasant disease to get.

Jack was gone, but now he’s back, so for us, it’s like he never left. Emily bailed Nolan out of jail, and while he’s not too keen on helping her with any computer-related revenge tasks, he’s still on her side and ready to play ball.

Everyone knows who Patrick is now, but the only one who seems overly pleased about his proximity to their lives is Victoria. Charlotte’s got the Grayson manner down now that she’s had a little time to mature and take everything that’s happened into consideration.

Just like mom and dad, she’s already threatening to put her newfound brother in his place if he screws anything up. Kind of fun to see her take charge instead of play victim for a change, but with the role models she’s had, this could get ugly.

And, Aiden’s back. Ready with an offer to help Victoria bring down Emily.

I’m not sure if he’s playing her or if he really means to put Emily in her place, but I never liked that guy. As for Jack, I’m not sure if he’s distancing himself from Emily to protect his son or if he really has no interest in being with her. I suspect it’s the former, but I don’t think we’ll find out for sure anytime soon.

Also there’s a super sexy French girl who used to know Daniel who’s popped up. She looks like Sophie Marceau’s daughter (Bond Girl 1999, ring a bell?), but whoever she is, she looks like trouble. (Just looked her up: totally didn’t recognize her! She played Colette on Pan Am a couple years ago. Her hair color is different, so I didn’t even connect the dots. Also–she’s Quebecoise, not French, not Marceau’s daughter, but I think they look a lot a like!)

Betrayal

I still had very little idea what this show was as I went into it. James Cromwell’s in it, so that’s a plus. Stuart Townsend is too, which blows.

Aside from the fact that I don’t really like people who cheat on their spouses, justified or not, it was actually sort of a sweet story. Sara meets Jack (Townsend) at an art show which is displaying her photography. There’s a chemistry there, if a little forced on the part of the writers, and they happen to run into each other again outside a camera/framing shop a few days later. The same spark ignites, and this time, they decide to let it burn a little to see where it takes them.

However, both Sara and Jack are married. Jack works for a powerful man, Thatcher Karsten (Cromwell) with syndicate ties, and Sara’s married to a hardnosed prosecutor with political ambitions.

So, of course, right after they give in to temptation, Karsten’s son TJ kills (or at least, is implicated in the murder) of one of their family members whom Karsten suspected of betraying the family. And guess who’s trying the case? Sara’s husband Drew.

It was a little slow–I think I looked at the clock a half a dozen times while it was on. I really have never liked Townsend, but he’s not bad here. Cromwell is perfect, as usual. Sara (Hannah Ware) is a little stiff with her dialogue, like she’s reading lines instead of having a conversation.

It was a little racy too, at times. I’m almost surprised they got away with it on network TV. There was fair warning about adult content before the show came on, and if you’ve seen anything on FX, this was pretty tame by comparison, but like I said, racy for network. It wasn’t gratuitous or super explicit like they were trying to get people to tune in for those scenes in particular, but it was there, it was mature. You’ve been warned.

Overall, I’m not sure the ratings are going to stick, let alone the story. I think the story’s all right, but it all feels a little forced and a little contrived. Too many convenient plot points. The fact that too many of these actors are unknown–even Townsend isn’t mainstream–and not all that interesting may create a problem as well. The only thing that could save it is Cromwell, but since he’s not the main character, I’m not sure that is going to do the trick.

If you like Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele type of dramas, this may be right up your alley. If ABC cancels it, I think it’d be perfect for the Lifetime network.

Up Next:

CBS Monday night is all new with How I Met Your Mother, the series premiere of We Are Men, 2 Broke Girls, Mom, and Hostages. Sleepy Hollow and The Blacklist are also new, but I’ll be catching up with those later this week.

Tuesday night, it’s all new Agents of SHIELD, New Girl, Trophy Wife, and Chicago Fire, plus Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Wednesday night, apparently I jumped the gun on the season finale of The Bridge, and it was actually a new episode last week. The finale is this coming Wednesday, and I should be able to watch it because it doesn’t interfere in the schedule (I don’t think). New episodes of Back in the Game, Nashville, and the premiere of NBC’s new drama Ironside with Blair Underwood are also on the list. I think I may watch Ironside and catch up with Nashville later, just because it’s new and I’m dead curious about it.

Thursday night, there’s a little change to the line-up, with two new premieres and a timeslot shift. The Millers (with Will Arnett) premieres on CBS, followed by Grey’s and The Crazy Ones starting on the hour, with The Michael J. Fox Show moving into the mid-hour slot AFTER the Crazy Ones. Then, it’s Elementary, Parenthood, and the premiere of Scandal all in the last hour block. I’m going to skip Grey’s, Parenthood, and Scandal, and catch up with them later on.

Friday, Five-0 is back for week 2. Does Kono escape? We’ll find out!

It’s a busy week ahead! Are you all hanging in there?

It affects chemicals in the body that are involved in the cause of some types of hurt. There are many medicines which give you things you need to be ready on your own terms. What doctors talk about viagra or cialis? It contains Sildenafil. Also known as erectile dysfunction is defined as the impossibility to attain an erection suitable for intercourse. About the Blog

This is a place to share my love and excessive fandom of film, actors, and television. I gush a lot, and I complain a lot, usually not simultaneously.

I share my take on the latest movies I’ve seen (some new, some new to me, and some classics that are worth a rewatch), and a little promotion here and there for shows or films that I feel deserve a little more attention than they’re getting.

So, kick back, settle in, switch on, tune in, or whatever you have to do and join in on the love for all things that move on-screen.
