Back in the Game
The promos for this made it look a little cheesy. A little simplistic. But after watching it, it was anything but. It was actually really funny!
Terry (Maggie Lawson, our favorite blond detective from Psych!) Is a recently divorced single mother living with her curmudgeonly father nicknamed “the Cannon” (played by James Caan). She’s a former baseball player and her father is obsessed with the game.
Having his grandson under his own roof only serves as an opportunity for The Cannon to perpetuate his love of the game. The only problem is the kid, Danny, (whom he keeps calling Donny, played by Griffin Gluck, aka Cooper’s son Mason from Private Practice) isn’t very good.
Terry doesn’t want her son getting all caught up in it like she was and getting disappointed by the Cannon like she did, but one she realizes how much it means to him, she jumps in headfirst. Pitching a ball at the league manager’s (read: jerk) head, volunteering to coach the misfits who didn’t make the team, and even recruiting her old man to help at practice.
It’s ballsy, super-funny, and it has heart–something every baseball-related show or movie needs to have. Terry is tough, way smarter than all her male counterparts, and really loves her kid. The Cannon is grouchy, ornery, and funny as hell. Danny is the project example of not falling too far from the tree. It may be a little predictable at times, but the sense of humor in this show more than makes up for it.
Nashville
Rayna is comatose after the car accident while Deacon is in jail, feeling guilty. So guilty, he pleads such to the charges even though he wasn’t actually the one driving.
Juliette meanwhile has a new album dropping and since she can’t push the release, she decides to capitalize on Rayna’s injuries in order to help boost her sales.
Scarlett and Gunner are still rocky, but I think they’ll mend their fences. Gunner seems to be in better shape than he was last season, but I think he’s still got a ways to go if he wants to make things right with Scarlett.
There were some sweet flashbacks between Rayna and Deacon, mostly precipitated by his guilt about relapsing. Though he may want to rot in jail, his court-appointed attorney actually knows what she’s doing.
They haven’t completely won me over for the season, but they’ve some nothing to turn me off either, so that’s something.
The Michael J. Fox Show
This was the pilot that I missed while I was watching The Crazy Ones. It was really good.
I know I didn’t say much about the show having only seen the second episode a couple days ago, but now I feel like I can praise it more honestly with no reservations. I felt the second ep was not as good as the first, but if you go back and watch the pilot first, I think you’ll see what all the fuss is about.
It’s really a lovely show about family and learning to overcome obstacles. Mike obviously has to overcome how he feels and his he thinks he’s perceived because of his Parkinson’s.
His wife has to help him do that while raising their two younger children and trying to get their oldest to learn how to transition into adulthood. His daughter has to learn how to appreciate her family, for all its dysfunction, instead of using it to her advantage. And Mike’s sister needs to do the same.
I’m glad I went back and watched the pilot. While I am leaning toward The Crazy Ones for that time slot, I think I will definitely be keeping up with this show online.
Up next:
You know what just hit me Friday as I was catching up with all these? Both Caans have series on primetime television! James has Back in the Game, and Scott has Five-0. Also, Harold and Kumar are both going to be on primetime TV Monday nights: John Cho is on Fox’s Sleepy Hollow and Kal Penn is on We Are Men. Crazy coincidence? Possibly. They’re all on different networks. I just thought it was terribly funny.
Anyway, we still have a double dose of Grey’s, Five-0, and Parenthood coming up!
