Grey’s Anatomy
I totally forgot the premiere was a double episode! And I managed to miss both of them. Oops.
Lots going on, lots of mayhem still ensuing after the storm of the century hit Seattle at the end of last season.
The hospital is still buzzing with incoming injuries, and the ER is so low on supplies that Owen suggests closing it. But, with so many people still showing up, the doctors don’t feel they can turn anyone away.
Meanwhile, Richard Webber is still electrocuted in the basement and Shepherd sends Ross to find him, but Ross, seeing an opportunity to help Shepherd, sends Heather so he can stay with Shepherd. Heather electrocutes herself by accident, stepping into water that was electrified, and Ross finds both of them in bad shape.
Callie shares Arizona’s infidelity with the group, and takes Sophia to the Shepherd/Grey house until she figures out where to go next. You know what? I don’t blame her. George cheated on her, and she almost saw it coming. But she never saw Arizona cheating on her, so this one stung even more. Plus, Mark’s gone and they have a kid.
Arizona didn’t just cheat on Callie, she cheated on their entire family. Normally, Cristina would be the wall that went up between her friend and someone who hurt them, but she actually plays it a little more level and convinces Callie to let Arizona see Sophia.
Meredith is trying to be useful from her hospital bed, making phone calls for supplies and what not, but when she learns Richard named her as the “family member” who has to make the decisions about his care, she has to refocus her attention.
Bailey is sure that the electrocution fried some of Richard’s tissue which is the reason his lactose number keeps going up, and wants to open him up to remove the necrotic tissue, but Cristina is worried that his heart won’t be able to take such an invasive surgery, considering he crashed several times already.
Bailey winds up right, as usual, and while she and Owen fight for Webber’s life, Shepherd tries to save Heather. She doesn’t make it. Which is really too bad. I liked Heather, even if the other interns didn’t have anything nice to say about her.
April’s crisis of feelings gets resolved when she realizes that she only wanted Jackson because he almost died, not because she was still in love with him. I’m still sort of rooting for those two, but it looks like she’s solidified her decision to marry the EMT, so we’ll see.
Cristina and Owen improve upon their last “together-time”, and do so admirably, but Cristina still has her foot firmly in place on the relationship status being over. These two I am most definitely still rooting for!
It looks like Sandra Oh is leaving the show at the end of the season, so they’ll have to resolve it by then, but I’d be glad to see Hunt go if it means he and Cristina get to stay together. I’m very interested to see how her character is written out. Death? Relocation? Some fantastic opportunity she can’t say no to? Maybe we’ll even see a glimpse of Burke again. (Doubtful, but you never know with these things.)
Parenthood
I’m so glad they brought back Ray Romano! He and Sarah don’t look like they’ll be back together, but they found a way to work him in: Max’s photography mentor.
In other news: Bobby Little is back! Remember that super-sexy guy who almost slept with Amber and “really disappointed” Kristina when she found out because she was helping with his campaign for city council or something? Now he’s running for mayor and he wants Kristina to run his campaign, with a promise of a position to make a difference in education once he takes office.
At first, she’s seriously considering it, but Adam makes some character point on the guy that make her think it may not be the right time. However, after visiting her friend in chemo and hearing what she has to say about it, Kristina decides to bypass the whole thing and run for mayor herself. She may not be as charismatic as Little, but I think she can do it.
Last season, Jasmine announced she was pregnant again. This season, the baby’s arrived (Aida Braverman), and Crosby is trying to hold it together as a new dad. Since he wasn’t there when Jabar was a baby (through no fault of his own), it’s his first time for the full-time baby duty and he’s struggling.
Both he and Jasmine are stressed, not sleeping enough, and short-tempered, but I think Jasmine is handling it worse than him. Not seeming to appreciate the fact that this is going to take some serious getting-used-to on Crosby’s behalf because he really hasn’t done this before. Which is technically her fault.
Crosby is worried because he doesn’t feel anything about the baby yet, but Adam explains that sometimes it’s like getting to know and love any other person–it takes time.
Amber and Ryan are Skyping because he’s in the field, aka a war zone, and she’s worried that he’s been so damaged, he doesn’t want to be with her anymore. But, to her surprise, he proposes right when he gets back, still in uniform. She looked so 60s, too, with the little summer dress she was wearing. It was like a scene out of a movie from that era.
Congrats to Joel on getting a two-year construction project! While Julia is supportive, the fact that a rather attractive woman is the one in charge of the project seems to bother her a bit. She is also trying to go back to work, but her old boss seems to be holding a grudge and giving her some negative feedback. (I was under the impression that you weren’t allowed to do that when someone called about a previous employee. If you didn’t have anything nice to say, all you were supposed to do was say, yes, they had worked there. Maybe it’s different with law offices?) I suspect this will lead to her opening her own practice. Bravermans are very independent.
And Sarah. She’s missing Drew who’s off at college. Living on her own as a building superintendent. Taking pictures of pets, apparently, to make a living. And, of course, there’s a good-looking chauvinist who lives nextdoor who is clearly into her. I wonder how this will go?
I was expecting more stuff to rail against in this season, and more reasons to stop watching it, but it seems to be a slight improvement so far over some of the BS that was going on last season. I still love so many of the characters, and especially so many of the actors, so if I do give up on this show, it’s not going to be easy, and it’s not going to happen overnight.
Hawaii Five-0
When we left off last spring, McGarrett was visiting Wo Fat, whose high security holding cell was being breached by some pretty high-tech criminals coming after him. McGarrett manages to take out three of them by himself, no weapon – should we start calling you Bourne, McGarrett? – and leaves one alive to question. One gratuitous shirt change and half-naked man candy scene later, their offices are being broken into as well, and Chin Ho has to hold down the fort on his own.
The criminals have hostages down in the lobby of the building and once they get the info they need from Five-0 HQ off the supercomputer, they bust it to pieces. McGarrett and Danno manage to get in touch with Chin and get a couple clues as to what’s going on, but once the crew reaches the lobby, the criminals surrender and let themselves be walked out, hands up, into the plaza where SWAT was ready to breach.
Craziness ensues as McGarrett has to release the criminals because their ringleader has kidnapped Catherine, and then has to go back and recapture them all before they get on a boat/plane/chopper. He gets shot at, jumps onto a helicopter, and kills the last two before having to land the thing himself in a parking lot. Plus, the bad guys torch Danno’s Camaro. Way not cool.
After all this, McGarrett goes back to the military plane that has custody of Wo Fat, and asks him again why his mother was visiting a criminal like him. Once again, he leaves with more questions than answers, but he gets to slam Wo Fat’s face into the bars of his cell, if only to get a blood sample. Apparently this psychotic daddy-killer who’s been hounding Five-0 for two years might be Steve’s brother.
The big cliffhanger is what what the criminals were looking for on the Five-0 computer. It turns out they have Kono’s location, and she’s not able to get out before they show up.
Up next:
Yay! All caught up! Though I’ve only officially crossed off one show so far, there are three more on the chopping block for week two: Hostages, The Blacklist, and Mom. We also have some more series premieres: Betrayal, We Are Men, Ironside, and The Millers. I don’t want to speculate just yet on the reasons why this will probably be the case, but I have a feeling only one or two of these is going to stick.
Also, it occurred to me how many familiar faces I’ve seen this week, and I thought I’d do a tally of Whedony alums who are now on network series:
- Alyson Hannigan (Buffy), Neil Patrick Harris (Dr. Horrible), AND Cobie Smulders (The Avengers) on How I Met Your Mother
- Harry Lennix (Dollhouse) on The Blacklist
- Amy Acker (Angel, Much Ado about Nothing) on Person of Interest (Even though I don’t watch this, I wanted to include it because Amy Acker is a superhero)
- Clark Gregg (The Avengers, Much Ado about Nothing) and J. August Richards (Angel) on Agents of SHIELD
- Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) on The Crazy Ones
- Daniel Dae Kim (Angel) on Hawaii Five-0
This list certainly isn’t exhaustive, considering Gina Torres is on Suits on USA, David Boreanaz is still on Bones, and Nathan Fillion is on Castle, not to mention a handful of other people I’m sure I’m forgetting, but how cool is it that so many people we fell in love with because of Joss Whedon shows get to strut their stuff on new shows we love?
Anyway, Revenge returns Sunday night, followed by the series premiere of Betrayal. Next week, I’m going to give the new Lifetime drama Witches of East End a shot. Not entirely sure why, but the previews don’t look half bad, even if they don’t tell you anything about what the show is going to be about, besides witches and really good looking people.
