Agents of SHIELD
May I just say, well done, sir. Well done. They really knocked this one out of the park.
It was so nice to see so many familiar faces–J. August Richards (Angel), Ron Glass (Firefly), and a few other names in the behind-the-scenes credits, not to mention the main man, back from the dead, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg).
I’ll get it out of the way now: I was a little disappointed at the simple explanation for Coulson’s non-death. I had guessed Fury lied about Coulson’s death in order to unite the Avengers. So, I had really hoped there would have been a more sophisticated explanation that I couldn’t have guessed at, but like Stark said, Fury’s a spy, he’s THE spy, so it makes sense that he lied.
Aside from that, it was awesome. Fancy toys, hackers, hitters, and supers galore! It was a blast to see Richards again on a Whedon show, and a super in his own right this time!
However, as cool as that was, and as awesome as Gregg was–he gets to be funny! And he’s so good at it!–Skye stole the show in my book. The non-SHIELD member pseudo-anarchist hacker totally killed it. She was funny, super-smart, and she had Ward and Coulson’s numbers from the get-go. You may remember her (Chloe Bennet) from last season’s Nashville as Hailey, Gunner’s one-time girl before he and Scarlett hooked up. After seeing her on AoS, it’s pretty clear to me she was born to be a Whedony girl! Brainy and glib? Home run.
The other agents are interesting as well in their own ways, I particularly like the techie Scot, Leo Fitz. He’s adorable. Reminds me a little bit of Topher from Dollhouse, and not just because he knows his way around a circuit board.
BONUS: Cobie Smulders showed up! Totally wasn’t expecting that, seeing as she’s got a full-time gig over at CBS on How I Met Your Mother, but it really helped sell the Coulson revival and the premise of SHIELD and its goals.
Basically, what I’m saying is, I won’t be watching Dads or Brooklyn Nine-Nine this season unless Fox lets me do it on Hulu, or unless AoS has the night off 😉
New Girl
So I missed last week, but it’s a sitcom, so I can’t imagine there were that many major plot points that wouldn’t be reiterated in this week’s ep.
Jess and Nick seem to be working out nicely. Schmidt is stringing Cece and Elizabeth along simultaneously which is shitty, no matter which way you look at it or how much you adore Schmidt.
But! Fun guest role from Dreama Walker (the other “B” in apartment 23)! Jess is upset she hasn’t made any friends at her new school, so she tries to get in with “the cool teachers”. It involves a lot of drinking, dancing in a toilet, and hijacking their boss’s “jacooz”.
But, Nick comes through as the guy with his shit together and stops her from getting fired, getting them both invited into the jacuzzi to endure her new boss’s tiresome stories.
Winston ditches his gal when he finds out she’s been seeing other guys, even after he asked her to be exclusive, and instead of killing her cat as revenge, he just takes the cat with him. Season 3 in the loft with a cat. This should be fun. Especially since the furball really seems to like Schmidt…
In general, the show looks to carry on as it has before. The jokes are still funny, the bits are good, the characters are all their hilarious selves. It even looks a little less contrived than last season, so that’s promising.
Trophy Wife
I didn’t get around to watching the pilot when Hulu had it available in advance, and I really wish I had! It was awesome!
Going into this show, I was thinking Malin Akerman didn’t belong on TV. She’s too sexy. Too much of a serious actress to be on a sitcom. Wrong-o. She rocks!
The show’s premise is the trophy wife Kate (Akerman) trying to be a third wife to her older (middle-aged) husband, a stepmother to his three children from two previous marriages, and a halfway decent human being to his two ex-wives, Diane and Jackie, played by Marcia Gay Harden and Michaela Watkins.
I am always up for Bradley Whitford. I don’t care that he’s usually a dick on everything but Sorkin shows. He makes me laugh. And he keeps it up on this show–he’s funny in that underhanded, not-necessarily-intending-to-be-funny way and it is perfection.
Of course, because I love this show so much, there’s a good precedent it may be canceled on that basis alone. Which would suck. I think ABC is a little more forgiving in terms of letting shows run longer than they should, so maybe we’ll get a full season out of it. I sure hope so.
This is one motley crew of characters (especially ex-wife #2, Jackie!), and I hope A) it gets picked up for a full season, B) the writers don’t screw this up and run it into the ground, and C) the network doesn’t force the writers to screw this up and run it into the ground.
I expect it will be on Hulu today, as most ABC shows hit Hulu the day after air, so check it out if you missed it last night. Comment and let me know what you thought!
Chicago Fire
Action-packed, as usual. The Dawson/Casey thing is still a point of tension. Casey has apparently picked up some baggage: the widow we first saw last season has latched on, and she got into a drunk driving accident to do it.
Molly’s is struggling, but I hope things will pick up.
Meanwhile, Severide, at Shay’s suggestion, is starting to doubt the parentage of the child his girlfriend is carrying. Her math ain’t wrong, so I think Renee may be hiding something. But, judging from the previews for next week, she isn’t happy when Severide starts asking questions.
The house is on the short list to be closed, so the Chief and all the guys have to be on their best behavior. No sexual harassment suits, no in-house brawls, no missing painkillers, etc. There’s even a skirt keeping an eye on it all, making the decisions, cutting costs, and setting a lieutenant up on the inside to look out for any troublemakers.
It looks to be an intense season, and right now, I’m still on board.
Up next:
I did watch Sleepy Hollow and The Blacklist, but I didn’t have time to write them up. If I can, I’ll put them in with Wednesday night’s recap of whatever I am able to see of Nashville.
As I mentioned in Monday night’s recap, I’m going to the Boulder stop on the Doctor Sleep tour to see Stephen King tonight, so I will definitely miss Back in the Game, and I’m going to miss Sunny either way because FXX was removed from our programming. I’m hoping to catch most of Nashville, but no promises.
Happy Hump Day! (See below 😀 )
