Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premieres this week, already with over a million Facebook fans and 100k Twitter followers, I thought I’d feature the man with a plan, Agent Phil Coulson, played by the incredible Clark Gregg, in this week’s 6DKB (what do you think of the abbreviation? Yes or no?).
Clark Gregg is another one of those actors who’s had roles for years, but people didn’t really start taking notice of him until he made friends with Marvel. Because Coulson is a recurring role in the Marvel films, and his lines are so glib, he stood out. And now, the world will know the name of Clark Gregg as the man who didn’t die in The Avengers and went on to star in a hit ABC TV series. (Too early to call it a hit? I don’t think so.)
Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon
Clark Gregg
I’m so glad to see Gregg popping up everywhere. If you’ll remember, he played Leonato in Whedon’s Much Ado about Nothing. I’m making my way through the fourth season of The West Wing, and there he is again as Special Agent Michael Casper. He has made movies with Harrison Ford (Clear and Present Danger), Julia Roberts (I Love Trouble), and Robin Williams (One Hour Photo), just to name a few. He was taught at NYU by a man we know as William H. Macy, and he’s even married to one of the most iconic women of the 80s, Jennifer Grey. But, in sticking with the Marvel theme, it was in the first Iron Man movie that he met perhaps one of the greatest living actors working today…
Jeff Bridges! That’s right, Clark Gregg worked with The Dude himself in Iron Man, where Bridges played a major Stark Industries executive, the two-timing Obadiah Stane. Jeff Bridges has had a long and incredible career spanning several decades, and he’s played so many memorable characters along the way. However, I think most people will remember him best as The Dude, Jeff Lebowski, in the Coen brothers’ 1998 film, The Big Lebowski. It was in this film that Bridges worked with one of my favorite redheads…
Julianne Moore! I fell in love with Moore all the way back in 1995 when I saw her in Nine Months. It was perhaps a tad age-inappropriate at the time (I was 7), and I didn’t understand some of it until I watched it again when I was a few years older, but it still makes me laugh, and Moore is just adorable in it. She has come a long way over the years, having been nominated for four Oscars, and playing alongside some incredible actors: Anthony Hopkins, Annette Bening, David Duchovny, Meryl Streep, Ralph Fiennes, and of course…
Kevin Bacon! Once again, we find Crazy Stupid Love to be a good place to make our way back to the big man. Bacon played the man in Moore’s extramarital affair, David Lindhagen, and the rest is history.
The Results: 2 degrees of separation!
I knew this had to be pretty easy, Gregg being next to so many actors with such long careers, and I really hoped I’d be able to work Bridges in, and voila! I even got to use The Big Lebowski as the connector! Despite how simple it turned out, I had come to about four other connections (via Stellan Skarsgaard in Thor and The Avengers, and Scarlett Johansssen and Jeremy Renner in the same Marvel Universe) but I knew there had to be a way to use Bridges so I kept looking, and it was right under my nose. I always seem to forget about Moore as Maude in The Big Lebowski, probably because Donny and Walter always come to mind first. Anyway, a win’s a win!

By the way, if you ever see a way to pare down the degrees of separation and point out how to connect the actor in question to Kevin Bacon through fewer connections, leave a comment and prove your movie buff prowess!
