We recently got a subscription to Showtime, and it happened to coincide with the premiere of their new series, Ray Donovan, starring Liev Schreiber. I’ve really been enjoying it, and I’m relieved that we’ve got the subscription through the end of the series. It’s gritty, ugly, and the acting is hardcore.
I’ve never seen a lot of Schreiber’s work, and what I’ve seen, he hasn’t stood out that much. But this guy is primed for a Golden Globe for this role, in my humble opinion. Jon Voight too, but that’s beside the point. With this awesome new show in mind, this week’s edition of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon features the show’s flawed hero.
Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Episode 9
Liev Schreiber
I already talked him up for Ray Donovan, but one of the few other roles I’ve seen and loved of his was the quiet little film, The Painted Veil, starring real-life partner, an Academy Award nom in her own right…
Naomi Watts! I wasn’t crazy about Naomi Watts the first time or two I saw her, but after a few more films, I was hooked. This woman is hardcore. Beautiful, smart, and incredibly talented, it’s no wonder she’s been nominated for an Oscar, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s up for another few in her career. Maybe she’ll even win one! (You hear me, Academy? Give a girl her due!) A powerhouse superwoman like Naomi Watts has been privy to the company of plenty of other major Hollywood people including….
Dustin Hoffman! One of my favorites, from The Graduate to Hero to Stranger than Fiction, this guy can do it all. But it was on I Heart Huckabees that he and Naomi Watts worked together. If you haven’t seen that movie, you’re missing out on one of the best indie movies of the 21st century. Some hard existential and philosophical questions painted against a hilarious background with an all-star cast, it was definitely worth watching, over and over and over again. Aside from Lily Tomlin, Jude Law, Anne Bancroft, Geena Davis, and many others, one of Hoffman’s most memorable roles was in a movie in which he played a high-functioning autistic, alongside another Hollywood superstar…
Tom Cruise! With a career as long as his, it’s no surprise he’s been in movies with some pretty awesome people. And one of his most memorable roles, with one of cinema’s best known scenes, put him alongside our hero…
Kevin Bacon! The scene was a military courtroom. Bacon was standing behind the counsel’s desk, while Cruise squared off with Nicholson:
Jessup (Nicholson): You want answers?
Kaffee (Cruise): I think I’m entitled to them.
Jessup: You want answers?
Kaffee: I want the truth!
Jessup: You can’t handle the truth!
And the rest was history. One of Rob Reiner’s best films, and one of the best films about the law, Bacon, Cruise, Nicholson, Moore, Pollack… What a great movie and great cast. A Few Good Men. I said it once, I’ll say it again: See it.
Results: 3 degrees of separation!
This was a really easy one. And I actually could have done it in two, but I thought the Dustin Hoffman connection was more fun to include, so I decided to put it up this way. As a matter of fact, there were about five ways I could have connected Schreiber with Bacon, and they all would have been fun. I’m sure there’ll be plenty of ways to bring up these other films and connections later on, but for now, we’ll stick with this one.

By the way, if you ever see a way to pare down the degrees of separation and point out how to connect the actor in question to Kevin Bacon through fewer connections, leave a comment and prove your movie buff prowess!
