If you somehow missed the show I’ve been waiting for since I heard about it back in April, you suck and fail at life. I’m not kidding. It was an hour and a half long pilot, and I didn’t even notice. It was that freaking good.
I half-assed live-tweeting because I was so engrossed in the show. I barely even multi-tasked except during commercials. They had me at “white arms, brown legs”, and kept me on the edge of my seat for an hour and a half. It takes a lot to put me on the edge of my seat. I’ve seen a lot of movies and a lot of TV. I announced an expectation before the show started, that I was prepared for my mind to be blown, and while it was more a casting choice than the show as a whole that blew my mind, that says nothing to how good it was.
This is totally a fish-out-of-water feel for Diane Kruger. She’s a little cold, a little absent, a little too methodical compared to her previous roles. But she pulls it off. She’s kind of a bitch, actually, without meaning to be. Sonya Cross, El Paso Homicide. I cannot wait to see her progression from automaton by-the-book police detective to unraveling, scared shitless serial killer hunter. Not sure if that’s exactly what will happen, but her evolution will be interesting.
Sonya [To the dead woman’s husband whom she’s questioning]: I’m sorry if I didn’t exercise empathy.
And Demian Bichir? Don’t get me started on how freaking good this guy is. He’s funny, smart, and the perfect counter-balance for an uptight El Paso detective.
The mind-blowing part? They got an actor famous for playing a serial killer in a famous serial killer movie to play the Lieutenant of the El Paso PD: Ted Levine played Buffalo Bill, the cross-dressing human flesh-coat sewing crazy from Silence of the Lambs. And now he’s a cop. It took me a while to place him (actually, I Wikipedia’d it), but I KNEW I knew that voice!!
I’m not sure what Annabeth Gish’s role is in this show. I know her well, first from Double Jeopardy, and then seasons 8 and 9 of The X Files (note my timeline is asynchronous from the times these were filmed). I’m not crazy about her, but I’m curious to see what happens to her. She appears in the first few minutes as the wife of a man who’s having a heart attack, trying to cross the bridge back into the states.
However, Sonya’s just called dibs on the dead body in the middle of the bridge, and she doesn’t want anyone contaminating her crime scene. Ruiz (Bichir) lets them pass. Clearly, he’s got the empathy thing nailed.
Anyway, Gish plays Charlotte, and her husband, though he makes it to the hospital, dies, leaving her with a mysterious phone call from a woman, a mysterious key to an even more mysterious door under their property, and more questions than answers. Did he have something to do with the killings? We’ll have to find out.
And the actual serial killer? He’s hardcore as evidenced by his crimes, but he hasn’t gotten too batshit crazy just yet. I’m waiting. And, he’s one of them killers on a mission. To bring ethnic harmony to the border between El Paso and Juarez? So he claims. Why should a dead white woman be so much more important to the police than dozens of dead Mexican girls? he says in his unnerving message at the end of the episode.
This series promises to be a striking and perhaps horrifying portrayal of border politics, immigration, and racism on the US/Mexican border, but is that also the killer’s goal? I doubt it. It’s too ecumenical. Serial killers have a tendency to indulge their egos, and I refuse to believe this one is any different. He may be trying to make a point to the cops, but not so big a point that it gets him caught and unable to continue his “work”.
One episode down, the rest of the season to go. I’ve been looking forward to this show for months, and I was not disappointed. Seriously, check your listings for an encore, because this is one show you’re not going to want to miss. I’ve been a pretty loyal FX fan for years, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Justified, etc. etc., but this may be the best new show since Justified debuted. Yeah, I said it.
Up Next:
I have no clue. There’s a new movie review up tomorrow, and I’ve got plenty more where that came from, but nothing much more immediate than that. If you missed this week’s edition of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, check it out here, with the lady of the hour, Diane Kruger. I want to do one next week with either the Newsroom or Suits, since both season premieres are next week, but I haven’t made up my mind yet. I’ll probably recap the Newsroom season premiere, and possibly the one for Suits if I have time, but we’ll have to see.
In the meantime, get thee to a television and find the series premiere of The Bridge already!!!
