Happy Endings
I’m very sad to see them go. There’s still no word on whether it’s going to be renewed (as far as my usual sources are aware, anyway), but I’ve enjoyed spending time with this crazy crew over the past three seasons.
The first episode was a Jane/Brad vs. Max/Alex tennis extravaganza while Dave and Penny had to deal with their parents’ (currently dating) decision to adopt a baby.
Jane and Brad want to join a country club so they could have something just for themselves but Max and Alex think it’s something for them to do to be a part of a “rich person” cult. They decide to play for it, settling it with a tennis match–which no one has done since the eighties. Complete with eighties music, the over-competitive Jane manages to slaughter her sister and friend on the other side of the court. But, she goes McEnroe in her celebration, and gets them kicked out of the country club anyway.
Dave and Penny try to set up a “baby for a day” to show their parents how hard it is to raise a kid, especially at their age, and manage to get themselves into trouble with the baby’s mom. They did a casting call and were going to “borrow” the baby for a couple hours, but they end up having to pay off the mom not to call the cops.
Having Megan Mullally and Michael McKean back is always a treat, especially in the same episode!
The second episode focuses on the eldest Kerkovich sister, Brooke, played by Stephanie March (the former ADA on Law and Order: SVU). Apparently she’s even Jane-ier than Jane is!
But, the entire wedding goes to hell with Brooke trampling over every decision Jane makes. Alex and Dave broke up and haven’t told anyone except Max and Penny, who have to spread other rumors when one of the Kerkovich relatives overhears them discussing the break-up, and Brad feels competitive against Brooke’s fiance Elliot, our friend James Lesure from Men at Work.
In the end, the truth comes out, and the six friends dance at the reception. I hope it won’t be their last. I’m still hoping for a Dave and Penny plot!
Smash
Last week, we had a pretty scary cliffhanger in which Kyle gets hit by a car. This week, there are no protracted hospital visits or anything like that: he’s just dead, and everyone from Bombshell and Hit List has to react to it.
Everyone is very upset, naturally, but the biggest challenge is finding Jimmy and telling him what happened. He was one of the people closest to Kyle, so he doesn’t take it well at all.
Aside from that, Julia and Tom are dissolving their partnership. Julia thinks Tom is trying to tie up Gatsby to spite her, but in fact, he just wants to “declutter” things and cut some of the strings that would be attached were she to continue writing it while it’s still optioned in both her and Tom’s names.
However, after Scott pulls a stunt to get the Hit List show to go on the next night after Kyle’s death, I’m thinking Julia may change her mind about writing the story as a play, as she already took it off the table from Scott.
And, after Karen’s shameless display last week, inviting Derek back to her place, they end up only making out. Both of them put a stop to it before anything else happens, but he does stay the night, much to Jimmy’s chagrin when he shows up at her window. I’m relieved. Apparently Karen’s in love with Jimmy, and Derek still has a thing for Ivy, but as long as it means no Derek/Karen romance, I’ll take it.
It was quite a lovely tribute episode for Kyle, done in flashbacks with each of the characters who were closest to him, Jimmy, Julia, Tom, etc. The scene with Tom was especially touching: Tom played Billy Joel’s “Vienna” for Kyle. I love that song anyway, and it was quite fitting for the scene. I was a little surprised because this show doesn’t do Billy Joel stuff, but it was a pleasant surprise.
The first movie I remember hearing that song in was 13 Going on 30 when Jennifer Garner came home to her parents after realizing what a horrible person she’d grown up to be. If there’s one thing about Billy Joel, the guy has amazing lyrics–they really make you feel something. In any case, it’s a very sweet scene, so if you missed the episode, check it out on Hulu or NBC.com and watch.
