Wednesday: A Handyman, a Mayoral Campaign, and a Setup

5 May 2013 by Jess

I was really tired this week, so I couldn’t put the recaps together on time. I’m working on catching up (once again), but I don’t expect to finish them all today. In any case, here’s Wednesday night:

The Family Tools

It’s not great, but it’s not terrible. I love JK Simmons. Thank You for Smoking, Juno, even Spiderman, the guy is hilarious and one of those supporting role icons. But, this show doesn’t focus around him (Tony) as much as it does his son, Jack, played by Kyle Bornheimer. He’s done a lot of supporting roles and guest appearances over the years, but nothing I recognized him in.

The big surprise in casting was the handyman business employee, Darren, played by Edi Gathegi, who I immediately recognized from X-Men: First Class, as Darwin. If I keep watching this show, it may be for Gathegi and Simmons.

Also, we recognize Leah Remini from King of Queens. She also has a more minor role in this than expected, playing Jack’s aunt Terry.

The premise is: Jack’s the Van Wilder/Tommy Boy/Dupree character of the family–black sheep, keeps trying to make something of himself and failing. But, when his dad Tony has a heart attack, and continues to end up hospitalized for anxiety and heart symptoms, he comes home to take over the family business, a handyman business, fixing things, building things, on a contract basis.

Jack is having fun trying to be responsible, and he gets a kick out of being the boss, but he’s also having some trouble learning how to manage a business. His dad always gave him a hard time, so he never really learned much from him except how to have low self-esteem.

Terry is sort of the peacekeeper, trying to keep Tony from overexciting himself and having another episode, while trying to help Jack find his footing in his new role.

It’s all right, but it’s hard to say if it’ll stick around. It’s slotted in during ABC’s usual Wednesday night comedy with a lead in from The Middle, and followed Modern Family and How to Live with Your Parents.

Then again, that ridiculous alien show with Jamie Gertz managed to stick it out, so maybe it’ll be a hit. People do love Leah Remini – she’s being underutilized on this show, especially in a comedic capacity, but she is a draw for anyone who has seen her comedy.

Psych

Shawn runs for mayor. It’s hilarious. First he’s trying to win the race, then he needs to back off when it looks like he might actually win.

However, with Gus managing his negative ads, it’s pretty easy to lose ground when your best friend has no qualms “helping” you out and sharing all your darkest secrets, and lying about a few more.

The best part is the Shawn and Juliet subplot: Juliet tells him that she can’t trust him, but if he told the Chief the truth, she might be able to start trusting him again. Shawn actually goes to her at the end of episode to do just that, but Juliet stops him. She says it was selfish of her to ask that, and they actually make some progress getting back to where they were when they were together.

The Americans

It was the finale, and Granny ends up making the biggest success. She kills the man who had killed one of the KGB’s operatives, Zhukov, and warns the command that Philip and Elizabeth are heading into a trap.

Elizabeth tells Philip she wants to take the meeting to get the intel and that Philip should be the one to take off with the kids if anything should go wrong.

But, when Philip realizes the meeting was a setup, he goes to pick her up and get her out of there. They succeed in a sense, but Elizabeth gets shot during the getaway.

Since Stan and the FBI’s setup failed, he’s unable to secure Nina’s “new life”, but he promises to do so as soon as he’s able to.

Elizabeth is in the hospital, and Granny tells Philip he should go home and look after the kids, get some rest, but he won’t leave Elizabeth. He calls Stan to watch the kids, and sits with Elizabeth until she wakes up. When she does, she tells him to come home, in Russian, a language she hasn’t spoken in years.

Even though she’s been shot, this was a lovely way to end the season. It looks like their marriage will be repaired, but there’s not enough information to know what next season will hold. Either way, this was one of the best thrillers on TV this spring, and I’m so glad I get cable to be able to watch it!

Up next:

Recaps from Thursday, the finale of Happy Endings, catch-ups from the week, and the new episode of Smash.

About the Blog

This is a place to share my love and excessive fandom of film, actors, and television. I gush a lot, and I complain a lot, usually not simultaneously.

I share my take on the latest movies I’ve seen (some new, some new to me, and some classics that are worth a rewatch), and a little promotion here and there for shows or films that I feel deserve a little more attention than they’re getting.

So, kick back, settle in, switch on, tune in, or whatever you have to do and join in on the love for all things that move on-screen.
