I wanted to do one that was a bit challenging this week, so I picked Megan Hilty, aka Ivy Lynn/Marilyn on NBC’s Smash. She hasn’t done very much in the way of films or regular series aside from Smash, so that was pretty much the only connection I was able to use. However, I succeeded. Check it out!
Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Episode 3
Megan Hilty
Ivy Lynn is a great character. While she hasn’t been in much outside of Smash, Hilty does share the screen with her handsome British costar…
I always enjoy watching him. Out of all the stars from that show, he is one of the only ones
(Gina Bellman is the other–Sophie from TNT’s Leverage) who’s made a successful transition
into American productions. His resume includes a supporting role in
one of the most popular and successful film franchises of the past decade,
Pirates of the Caribbean, in which he played James Norrington,
right alongside powerhouses Geoffrey Rush, Johnny Depp and…
to keep bundled up in all those petticoats and corsets all the time.
However, she has the style and class to play classic characters like that,
so I guess I can’t blame them for casting her in those roles. While she is probably
best known as Elizabeth Swann from Pirates, this photo is actually from
one of my favorite films with her, Atonement. Another period piece, but it was the 1920s,
at least, instead of the 1820s. She was one of the few well-known actors in the film
(at least to us Americans), and she starred alongside one of my other MAJOR favorites/crushes…
to be just about anything, from a professional killer (Wanted) to a doctor in over his head
in a foreign country (The Last King of Scotland) to a handsome, full-head-of-haired
young Professor Xavier (X-Men: First Class). It was in that last one that he met
one of the greatest modern film icons, and the star of our weekly feature…
but as Sebastian Shaw, an ex-Nazi scientist with superpowers, he is pretty high up there
among movie evildoers. Seeing him go toe-to-toe with Michael Fassbender’s Magneto
is pretty hardcore, too.
Results: 3 Degrees of Separation
Woohoo! Even though I managed to work out the connection in only 3, it was a challenge! I generally try not to use IMDB to look movies up, but sometimes I have to in order to remember all the places I’ve seen these people (and to verify character names/spellings, etc). My bigger point of pride with this game is that I really try to avoid using connections with movies or television series that I haven’t personally seen. So, pretty much every connection on here is based on my own memory and filmophile experience. Using movies I haven’t seen feels a little like cheating for whatever reason.

By the way, if you ever see a way to pare down the degrees of separation and point out how to connect the actor in question to Kevin Bacon through fewer connections, leave a comment and prove your movie buff prowess!
