Chicago Fire
This was one of the best episodes all season. I’ve been back and forth on this show a few times because sometimes they have really great drama, really moving stories, and really beautiful stories about the family that is the firehouse. Other times, they make cheap plays for emotion and they take the easy way out on some of the storylines (Shay and Dawson’s car accident, for example). However, this one really was done well.
With Clarice gone, Shay decides she wants a baby of her own. She loved having a son, even if it only lasted a short while, and she really wants to create that kind of bond again with a child of her own.
At first, Kelly is a little skeptical, knowing she hasn’t always followed through on things (apparently there was an almost tattoo a while back that she backed out of), but after Dawson gives him her perspective, he realizes she may be serious about this. And to be honest, I think he likes the idea. He liked having that baby around too, so having a new one that he gets a closer connection with would probably be a plus.
Dawson and Mills finally decide to bring their relationship out in the open, leaving Kasey a little thrown, and Dawson does take some flack from her new business partners, Herrmann and Otis. Those three are still trying to decide what to do with the contents of the safe they found in the wall, and they come across even more stuff as they continue their search, including a war medal from one of the bar’s previous owners.
Because they’re honorable people, the three track down the medal honoree at a retirement home and bring it to him in person. The look on that old man’s face was one of the best moments of the show because you could see how appreciative and astonished he was that that medal had turned up again. He gives them full ownership of the bar for whatever stake he may have once held in it, and they get ready to leave.
However, Dawson gets an idea. Since they have had some trouble naming the bar, she goes back and asks the man what his wife’s name was (the woman he gave up the bar to be with). The three of them take the old man on a little road trip back to the old bar, and reveal the name they’ve chosen, Molly’s, after his wife.
Double points for creativity and sticking with the history on this one. I was wondering what they had found in the safe, and this was an excellent way of bringing that subplot full circle, so well done, writers.
We also get a little history about how Henry Mills died from Severide’s dad (Treat Williams returns). It turns out the chief had slept with Mills’ wife (Peter’s mother) and Henry had been trying to prove himself the night he died, taking unnecessary risks and ending up pushing himself too far. Dawson happens to be there when Severide’s father retells this story, so now it will be up to her whether she decides to tell Peter what she heard.
Kasey gets a little action as well from one of the widows who he accompanies to the ball as a favor. I know there’s sort of an unwritten rule that you’re not supposed to mess around with the widows of a firehouse, and even though she made the first move, he didn’t stop her. She seems a little old for him, though. I don’t know if she is, but she looks older.
After seeing Dawson and Mills together earlier, it’s not exactly surprising that he gave in to the moment, but it’s the follow-through that’s important.
Severide (to Shay after she asks for a sip of his drink): You gotta get your oven ready for that bun, baby.
Nashville
It’s Deacon’s birthday, and Juliette decides to throw him a party, knowing he doesn’t celebrate his birthday. She ropes Scarlett into the plot by asking her to get her uncle to the Bluebird for the party, and Scarlett and Gunnar “open” for Juliette. Something Juliette regrets after seeing them sing.
Rayna debates coming to the party after the morning tabloids who have caught wind of her and Teddy’s divorce. For once, she goes to her sister for support, and despite all the support and backing she and their father gave Teddy during the election, now they are full on behind Rayna during the divorce.
While Rayna is most worried about how her kids are handling the paparazzi, she also regrets not having told Deacon sooner. Though after that kiss in the elevator, I don’t blame her for not knowing if it was all right to tell him. He might have done something again and made the scandal even worse.
Part of the episode focuses on Gunnar’s brother after Gunnar finds a pistol in his laundry. Scarlett demands that they get rid of the gun and Gunnar’s brother for having it, but it doesn’t end well. Gunnar’s brother argued that he needed the gun for protection, and Gunnar, angry, throws it in the river. Later that night, after performing at Deacon’s party, Gunnar gets pulled away by the local police to identify a body. We can all guess whose it was.
He comes back home a wreck, blaming himself for the whole thing–if he hadn’t thrown the gun away, maybe his brother would have been able to protect himself and would still be alive. He might end up back in jail, but he’d be alive, at least. Scarlett, perhaps feeling a bit guilty too, tries to comfort him and assure him that it wasn’t his fault. Her hugs don’t seem to help, and for the first time, the two of them take things a little further into the non-friend zone.
While I would like to say, ’bout damn time!’, I’m not entire sure this was the right time for them to sleep together if they want to make things work.
