FYI: Tune in Friday on FX for a marathon of the first five episodes of The Americans! If you missed any thus far, now’s your chance to catch up!
How I Met Your Mother
Ted and Jeanette continue their on again off again relationship until Barney steps in. He pulls out the Playbook (yes, the one he “ceremonially” burned in front of Patrice and a hidden Robin) to help Ted pick up a date for his wedding.
When Robin finds out, she gets angry that he lied to her about the Playbook. However, when he explains that their entire relationship came about because of the lies he told, and the only thing that matters is how much he loves her, Robin forgives him.
After Jeanette locks herself in Ted’s apartment, tossing all of his stuff out of the window, she gets a hold of the Playbook that Barney left on the sofa to go after Robin. She also picks up the firecrackers that were a prop for one of the plays, and prepares to light ’em up, inside the Playbook! Ted tries to stop her, but Barney and Robin come up, and Barney tells her to go ahead.
The Playbook explodes midair and rains confetti down on Ted and the gang in the street with the rest of his stuff.
It’s then that Ted decides to settle down for good, and this time he means it. Like he meant it with Robin. And Zoe. And Victoria. And Stella. And Robin again.
Aside from Marshall and Lily getting married, who were a given from the start, Ted was always the guy who wanted to settle down. Now he means it? Right as they come up to the end of the penultimate season? Yeah, right. He’s always meant it. But the show wouldn’t have lasted eight seasons if he found her in season one!
I’m just giving the writers a hard time. I’m looking forward to meeting the girl with the yellow umbrella. 🙂
The Following
Somehow everybody lives and all the bad guys still get away. I don’t get it. When we left off, Ryan found the house that Emma and the boys had been staying in with Joey, while several levels of law enforcement make their way toward the house to surround it.
Ryan takes a risk and it pays off. He gets the drop on Jacob and Paul as Emma takes off with Joey, and escapes the house just as Mike and another agent show up. The agent turns on Mike and shoots him, helping Emma and Joey escape.
Meanwhile, Claire has been kidnapped by another one of Joe’s followers, and she learns that she’s “his chapter” to write. He’s been following her and watching her for years, even to the point that he has video of her in her house. Pretty creepy.
We FINALLY get a little more backstory on Debra (Annie Parisse) as we learn she grew up in one of those little religious communities in which incest is not only permitted, but required. We see a couple of instances in which she tries to say no to her father’s advances, and as she runs to her mother for protection, she discovers that there’s none to be had. The crazy twist? #Whedony alum Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers from BTVS) plays Debra’s mom!
Years after the abuse, we learn Debra ran away, much to the detriment of her family’s standing in the community. But, she returns. Simply to see her parents, whom despite having subjected her to such abuse, she misses and wants to forgive. It’s difficult to understand forgiveness of such an egregious crime, especially by one’s parents, but it was very admirable to see Debra come so far and learn how to find that forgiveness. It’s a very complex story told in short pieces of a single episode, but it’s pretty incredible.
By episode’s end, as I said, everyone’s still alive and the bad guys all get away. Emma still has Joey, Claire is still MIA, and Ryan seems to being having some heart problems, but I’m ready to see what they have in store for next week!
