Sorry these are a bit late, but I’ve been editing my book like mad to meet my publishing goals! Here’s recaps from most of the shows from last week.
The New Normal
It’s getting to be about that time–panic time, that is. David and Bryan have a small crisis with their dog, Harvey Milkbone. The vet thinks he might have something wrong with his stomach, but it turns out to be nothing. Then, as the vet keeps him overnight, he gets hit by a car as he’s taken out for a walk.
Meanwhile, Shania is acting out as Dame Maggie Smith from Downton Abbey. Her father comes back to town, and Goldie, overwhelmed by hormones, indulges in a little sex with the ex. It seems to have brought on some Braxton-Hicks contractions, causing a slight panic among everyone.
I’m actually surprised no pregnancy scares have happened before now. Then again, I’ve been watching Days of Our Lives for ten years and every time one of the characters gets pregnant, you can bet there’ll be some kind of problem. False positives, almost miscarriages, actual miscarriages, Braxton-Hicks, amniocentesis tests, paternity tests, early deliveries, etc, etc.
Until she delivers, I’m waiting for one possible scare after the other. Sad about Harvey Milkbone, but he seemed to have disappeared for a while there until this episode. I honestly kind of forgot about him.
Justified
Raylan helps recapture a fugitive right at the beginning, but not five minutes in, the man escapes and comes back for revenge.
As Raylan goes back in pursuit of the fugitive, he meets a pretty girl connected to the man’s family, Jackie Nevada. I don’t know if you’d recognize her, but this adorable gal was on (crazy coincidence) Days of Our Lives as Stephanie Johnson for a few years recently.
I always enjoy seeing DOOL alums make it off the REALLY small screen of daytime television and into the movies or into primetime dramas. It was also fun to see her and Timothy Olyphant play off each other for a bit, considering the age difference.
The wealthy gatekeepers of Harlan County manage to get into Boyd’s head about who really pulls the strings in their part of the world as he and Ava attend the “swingers” party. I’m interested to find out how this plays out. Boyd isn’t one to take orders from anybody unless he stands to benefit from it, and the ways these old guys are pushing him, I have a feeling this won’t end well.
The search for Drew Thompson continues, but as I understand, things may be coming to a head sometime real soon…
The Americans
Is it even possible for a show to keep getting better every week? I can’t stand how good this show is. If Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys aren’t recognized for this show in an embarrassingly grand manner next awards season, I’m going to be pissed.
In this particular episode, the US president is shot, and both the US and the Soviets are rushing around trying to figure out who’s responsible and whether or not there’ll be a nuclear war. Philip wants to keep Elizabeth quiet until they know for sure what’s going on. She thinks it’s more to do with his previous suggestion that they defect to America than just being cautious about the situation.
They visit their FBI agent neighbor to see if they can garner any information about how the US government is responding to the situation, but they don’t learn much.
Although it’s complicated, Philip and Elizabeth are fast becoming the most interesting on-screen couple on TV. Nothing against Sherlock and Watson, Sean and Gus, or anyone else, but they’ve got nothing on the tension and intensity between Philip and Elizabeth Jennings.
Chicago Fire
Dawson, Herrmann, and Otis are renovating the bar when they discover a safe hidden in one of the walls. Herrmann is deadset against opening it, afraid there’ll be a mobster’s head or something in there, while Otis and Dawson are staunchly in favor of finding out what’s inside. It’s two against one, but once the three of them open it up, they realize Herrmann was right. The camera never pans to show what they find, but I’m sure all will be revealed soon…
Meanwhile, Kasey has to ask Cruz to resign after he puts Mouch in danger on the job, blaming it on his “mistake” a few weeks back when he let the man antagonizing his brother die in a fire. Kasey hasn’t forgiven Dawson either for going to the dirty cop who tried to kill him. She tries to explain why she had to do it, but he’s not as forgiving.
Meanwhile, Kasey has to get a hold of his sister to try to work out something for their mother to stay with her since he told her she couldn’t stay with him anymore. However, their mom announces instead that she’s going to move in with her former cell mate so she won’t step on anymore toes.
Grey’s Anatomy
It’s the big moment: what’s going to happen with the purchase of the hospital? The docs have to put on their best faces as they meet with a billionaire investor to try to cover the rest of the money needed to but the hospital.
Cristina ends up telling Owen what’s going on because Pegasus came back in at the last minute, intending to part out the hospital after the sale goes through. He forgives her for keeping it from him and does his best to prevent the Pegasus sale, but in the end, it’s the docs who can’t pull it out. The meetings go well with the billionaire, but they’re unable to sway his pocketbook.
However, lucky Richard has been sleeping with Avery’s mother because she just happens to have that kind of disposable income available to her through the Harper-Avery Foundation. Richard tells her what happened, and she decides to put up the money necessary to buy the hospital, provided a member of the foundation sits in and helps oversee operations.
Jackson gets nervous, thinking he’s going to have to work for his mom, but rather, she wants him to be the member who sits in, presumably to give him some of the administrative experience he’ll need to run the Harper-Avery Foundation someday.
I was really nervous there for a while, but I’m so glad things worked out. It looks like things might be sparking for Alex and Jo as well, and it’s about time, too. We all saw this coming, but it was definitely good that they built it up a bit.
Elementary
Have to get this one out of the way–Lucy Liu needs to fire her waxer. He/she is WAY overdoing her eyebrows! There’s hardly anything left of them!
Ok, that’s done. In this episode, a civilian tries to get Sherlock to take on his case, claiming he was intentionally “given” the disease he has, CAA (cerebral amyloid angiopathy), and wants Holmes to find out who did it. Watson, being a former MD, knows that CAA is primarily genetic, but after speaking to some prominent geneticists, she and Holmes discover that it may in fact be possible to give someone such a disease.
Either way, Holmes rejects the case, despite being offered a very rare honeybee specimen, until it becomes a murder case.
Is it weird I thought the most interesting part was the bee? I learned a new word too: “apiculturist” meaning someone who enjoys and participates in the breeding of honeybees. Anywho, they solve the mystery, as usual, and Watson is coming along quite nicely with her detective skills as Holmes administers the Socratic Method at every possible moment.
Suits
WOW. What an episode! What a finale! Donna and Scotty have it out as Scotty reveals that she’s in love with Harvey. Harvey doesn’t really seem to know what to do with that.
Jessica and Harvey square off as they try to prove who’s more in control and who’s really holding all the cards. I couldn’t choose a side on that one–I love Harvey and I love Jessica, so watching them duel like that was pretty terrifying. I think Jessica won that one, but it’ll be interesting to see how Harvey handles it next season.
However, the big thing was Mike and Rachel–not only does he finally admit to her that he didn’t go to Harvard, but they do it in the file room. That one’s been coming for a long time now, but the culmination of it was pretty perfect. They’re both upset, but the point isn’t that they finally got it on, the real question will be how they respond to it when the new season returns (look for it this summer!)
Up next:
I still haven’t gotten to Go On, Smash, or 1600 Penn yet, but I’m hoping to get through them soon! Plus, Oscar coverage!
