Elementary “A Giant Gun, Filled with Drugs”
This was actually a pretty heavy episode, but I guess I enjoy watching John Hannah too much to have noticed. John Hannah (The Mummy films, Damages, Spartacus: War of the Danmed, etc.) makes a guest appearance in this episode as Rhys Kinlan, Sherlock’s now reformed former drug dealer whose daughter has been kidnapped.
Watson is immediately wary and focuses on keeping Sherlock as free of temptation as possible while Rhys is in town. However, as the search becomes more difficult and the threats to kill the girl increase, Rhys begins nettling Sherlock that he used to be better at solving these crimes when he was using drugs.
Sherlock stands up to him admirably and solves the case, bringing the girl back safely, though not before one of the men involved in the kidnapping, an undercover DEA agent, talks his way into their home leaving Watson and Rhys to fend for themselves.
All’s well that ends well, but it looks like we won’t be seeing Rhys anymore, seeing as Sherlock told him never to “darken his doorway” again.
Spoiler: IMDb has him listed as playing in another upcoming episode, so we haven’t seen the last of him yet!
Elementary “Details”
The lead detective, Bell, is the focus here as someone tries to frame him for murder. Sherlock immediately knows something isn’t right and tries to help Bell prove his innocence. As the investigation continues, all the clues point toward Bell as the murderer, but Sherlock believes they are all a bit too obvious and convenient for Bell to have truly committed the crime.
The big story from my point of view is that Sherlock finally offers Watson a job–not just an apprenticeship. He knew that his father hadn’t hired her to stay longer than her original six month commitment, but he lets his ego break down a bit and explains that believes they make a good team.
I couldn’t agree more. Does this mean they’ve been picked up for season two? I hope so!
Revenge “Union”
Funnily enough, I had been considering kicking this one out of the line-up the last few days. Part of the reason is that I don’t like having to tune in for just one show on Sunday evenings, and the other part has to do with things getting a little stale on the show.
Lucky I watched last week’s episode, Union, or I might have missed out! A TON of crazy shit happened, and there’s so much, I don’t even know where to begin.
Amanda and Jack are getting married, and planning a sailing outing for their honeymoon, leaving baby Carl with Declan and Charlotte for a few days.
The wedding brings up memories of Emily’s childhood as Amanda Clarke and how she and Jack had a pretend wedding as children with her dad presiding over the ceremony. Adorable. Still, it’s clear Emily still has feelings for Aiden, which I don’t understand, and when he finally comes back to her, she’s grateful to have someone to lean on for a bit.
When Emily discovers that Jack got into a partnership with Conrad Grayson to share ownership of the Stowaway, she immediately writes Amanda a check telling Jack to buy him out. Conrad says no, with all his new fancy plans to revitalize the waterfront and his gubernatorial aspirations, but Amanda won’t back down. She breaks into Emily’s secret hiding place and pulls out the laptop with video evidence of some of Conrad’s greatest illegal hits and blackmails him into accepting the buyout.
Conrad tells the Ryan brothers about this and Nate Ryan takes it upon himself to “take care of” the problem”. Things get really scary when the camera goes below deck on Jack’s boat and shows Ryan up to no good.
Aiden discovers his sister has been dead for a while, and takes some time away from Emily to deal with it, but as I mentioned before, they reunite.
However, the biggest thing that happened was Victoria’s incredible mother lioness instinct to protect her son. Helen stops by to threaten Daniel’s life to Victoria if she doesn’t hand over whatever evidence she has of the Initiative’s misdeeds, and Victoria leads her to the pool house. She offers up an empty safe as a distraction and then pulls out a loaded gun.
Helen doesn’t think Victoria will do it, but we, knowing she shot her mother’s lover once as a young girl, know full well she’s capable. I wasn’t surprised that she actually shot her. I’m hoping for a crossover episode between Scandal and Revenge so that Pope and Associates can clean up the body–CBS did a crossover with NCIS: Los Angeles and Five-0, it could happen!
As we’re left with a couple cliffhangers, they reeled me back in for another week, at least.
Revenge “Sacrifice”
After last week’s cliffhanger-filled event, who could have expected there was even more drama in this week’s episode? Instead of resolving some of last week’s questions, this week’s episode simply added to the load.
When we left off, Nate Ryan was cutting the radio wires on Jack’s boat as Jack and Amanda enjoyed their honeymoon sail to Nantucket. This week, Jack discovers Ryan’s cigarettes up on deck, but it’s too late–he’s already got a gun pointed at Amanda, demanding to know what happened with Conrad Grayson and his waterfront deal.
Emily finds out that Amanda took her laptop to blackmail Conrad into giving up the Stowaway, and she also discovers that Nate Ryan is aboard Jack’s boat, so she and Nolan plan a rescue at sea.
The Graysons are all hard at work cleaning up Helen Crowley’s murder, and they do a pretty good job of it without any help (no Pope and Associates clean-up crew this time), but a member of the Initiative is already onto them.
Nolan and Emily send Aiden in to help Padma get her father back, but their hard line negotiating doesn’t go down well with the Initiative.
Emily and Nolan arrive in time to save Jack, who, although having suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, is alive on the inflatable raft. Amanda sent him off to save him and while she holds her own against Nate Ryan, the evil bastard blows up the boat when he sees he’s lost. Emily has just arrived to help Amanda get back, but Amanda suffers mortal wounds from the explosion and the raft is damaged so that they can’t go anywhere.
Amanda dies in Emily’s arms, Jack’s boat sinks, and Emily is left on a half a raft, having to let Amanda’s body go in order to stay afloat, while she waits for Nolan to return for her.
It’s pretty horrifying that baby Carl will now be without a mom after all this, but the last shot of Jack is on the operating table, so we aren’t entirely sure he pulls through, but he probably will.
It’s business as usual at the Graysons’ house, but it’ll be interesting to see how Daniel processes everything in the weeks to come.
