Happy Endings “The Marry Prankster”
LOVED The Usual Suspects reference in this episode! One of my favorite movies and one of the greatest twists in a movie I’ve ever seen–fun to see it played on in a comedy.
Dave decides to prank Max after he experiences a prank at his food truck which he assumes was Max’s doing–some tough looking guys show up for a “guns for subs” program they believe the truck has.
However, the prank goes bad and Max vows revenge against the rest of the group. Brad and Jane go down right away, and Alex lives in fear of her prank that she tries to prank herself to align herself with Max so that he won’t prank her.
Max’s prank on Penny runs into a snag when it turns out Pete was preparing to propose to her. When Penny gets slimed, she assumes the proposal scenario (rose petals and an engagement ring) was a part of the prank, so she tries to prank Max back.
In the end, Penny gets her proposal from Pete and the group gets a fax from Alex that reads “gotcha”. The scene cuts to her walking down the street, limping (from an earlier prank), with her hair cut off (also from an earlier prank), and then her leg is better and she pulls off a wig that was missing the hair. Hence the movie reference. Hilarious.
Happy Endings: “Our Best Friend’s Wedding”
Penny and Pete are engaged, and while Penny is already getting carried away thinking about the wedding plans, Pete was thinking more along the lines of an elopement.
Jane refuses to allow this, as she has her heart set on planning the wedding, so she brings the gang to a wedding expo, Pete included, so she and Penny can show him how great their wedding could be.
Max and Brad pretend to be an engaged gay couple so they can get some cool shwag and mani-pedis, but Max ditches Brad (making it look like Brad did the dumping) for another hot guy he sees at the expo. Alex and Dave think about how their wedding went and how they might plan another one, if Dave would cede some decisions to Alex and let go his inner “groom-zilla”.
Penny realizes that as much as she wants a wedding, she wants Pete more, so she agrees to elope if that’s what he really wants. Stand-up guy that he is, he agrees to the wedding, saying he’s glad she was at least willing to consider doing things his way.
I’ve been hearing rumors that this one is on the chopping block for cancellation this year, and I really hope they don’t cancel it! I loved this show from the beginning (I know you hear that a lot) but it’s the closest thing to Friends on television today, with its own wacky twists and impeccable comedic acting, and I don’t want to lose it.
Go On
Ryan and Simone have to face the group after getting caught in bed together. Ryan thinks it’ll be fine, even though he can’t discuss the relationship in the grief group, until Janey starts showing up whenever he and Simone get close.
Once he realizes that it’s guilt over moving on that is causing her to reappear to him, he’s able to accept it and try to enjoy his new relationship.
Meanwhile, Yolanda, Fausta, Anne and Sonia try to get Lauren excited to plan her wedding. They bring Owen, who is apparently Lauren’s “body double”, to try on wedding dresses so they can find one that fits Lauren to show it to her. They also plan a “goddess” day instead of celebrating Valentine’s day, except that the entire group is invited.
I’m still not crazy about the Ryan/Simone thing. The show’s still relatively entertaining, but I’d like some more internal drama, I guess.
The New Normal
Bryan gets a little carried away helping a group of breast-feeding mothers by coordinating a flash mob to support their cause, and then whipping out his own breast-substitute-vest and breast-feeding a doll.
Shania is upset that Goldie didn’t breastfeed her when she was a baby, thinking it must have stunted her intellectual potential.
There is a stigma about breastfeeding in public and anyone who does it is pretty loud and proud about it. I’m a woman, so I don’t have a problem with it in principle, though I do prefer the blanket cover-up option to the bare-it-all option.
I don’t think it’s the breast-feeding that makes everyone so uncomfortable–I think it’s the breast on public display. This country is full of puritanical hypocrites who like half-naked models in their advertisements, but would prefer to avoid some of the less “sexy” displays of semi-nudity in the real world. It’s an interesting debate, but having Bryan in their with fake breasts did make it seem a little like a joke.
Up next:
Thursday recaps are coming, and I’m planning on doing some Superbowl commercial coverage! ABC Sunday is off tonight, but it’s Superbowl Sunday and a bonus episode of Elementary is on! I don’t really follow football, but the Superbowl’s always fun. Plus commercials 🙂 What a game, right?
And, CBS Monday is back tomorrow, along with a new episode of The Following!
