Guys with Kids
This one was pretty entertaining–Chris asks Nick and Emily to join him for the new “trivia night” down at the bar, and Nick and Sheila take over with their mutual insane competitive streaks. Marny tries to take some time for herself, taking Nick’s advice to lie to her husband about where she is in order to take such time, and fails miserably. Fortunately Gary decides to take it out on Nick after she fesses up.
I’ve made a decision, not easy, but I’ve been thinking about it for a while now: I’m pulling this show from the blog, not because it’s not good for a laugh, but because it doesn’t have a whole lot of commentary-worthy content.
It’s a sitcom, but unlike Go On and The New Normal, it doesn’t really delve into the stories and the relationships to make it worth posting regular updates about and bringing some attention to its nuances.
If someone dies, gets married, or gets pregnant, I’ll be sure to bring it back on a “ten” basis… (referring, of course, to Marshall and Lily’s rule on HIMYM: now that they have the baby, their friends can only come to them with a problem if it’s a “ten” or higher, e.g. Ted helping Victoria escape her wedding.)
The Americans
This is the big one. FX has been teasing us over the past few weeks with the previews. First just with the flag and the title, then giving us clips and scenes hinting at what the story might be about. I wanted to see it the second I saw the first preview. Now that I’ve seen it, I can’t wait to see more.
Keri Russell is in her meatiest role yet. She is one hell of a super-spy KGB agent. She is seductive, smart, impulsive at times, and beautiful. Her husband Philip is just as good. They play the part of the happy suburban family perfectly, and at night they go out and record conversations, kidnap people, and change license plates on their car in a back alley.
It’s Burn Notice, but darker. There’s rape, sex, violence, political conspiracy, and more. One of the most horrifying scenes is a flashback to when Keri Russell’s character Elizabeth Jennings was first training to join the KGB. A captain comes in and spars with her, saying he’ll “show her how things are done in the field”, but when he overpowers her, he takes the opportunity to rape her. Presumably to teach her about real life in the KGB, but possibly just because he’s a wanker.
Years later, Elizabeth has a family of her own and she still fantasizes about meeting the captain and exacting her revenge against him for that moment of lost innocence.
It’s heavy, but it’s gripping. Last Resort was heavy too, but it had too much going on to be able to follow the story. It’s haunting and terrifying in a way that no other show on television has accomplished.
I’m not going to summarize because 1) way too much happened in the hour and a half pilot, and 2) you really need to see it for yourself. Check your local listings for an encore presentation, but if you missed out, be sure to tune in next Wednesday for what promises to be an incredible story of suspense, betrayal, politics, and tough decisions.
Chicago Fire
Severide plans to move to Spain with his girlfriend, but after a visit to his father (guest start Treat Williams), he realizes he can’t leave the firehouse behind completely.
Kasey’s mom has her parole hearing and he speaks of forgiveness on her behalf. She gets released, but he is the “stable home environment” she has to be released to.
Dawson and Mills are still carrying on their fling, or whatever it is, despite her feelings for Kasey, but she seems to be more open to pursuing it now more than ever, especially after Kasey’s new living situation.
Lots of changes going on this week–one out, one in. As Otis prepares to transfer to a house where people seem to like him, as opposed to his current house where they still give him a hard time despite Mills being the new trainee, the house takes in a puppy out of good will. Name: “Pouch, half pooch, half couch.” A boy dropped him off when he said his dad was going to drown it. Knew they’d all come around–who can say no to a puppy?
Last but not least, Shea lets Clarice (aka pregnant ex-girlfriend) move in with her, but with Severide sticking around, we’ll have to see how that plays out.
It was nice to see Otis find a niche at the other firehouse, but I think they need to pick a subplot and run with it a bit. It’s hard to tell a story with so many characters, especially characters with such complicated personal lives, but I think this show needs to stop trying to be a Law & Order type of show and start becoming a Grey’s Anatomy type of show in terms of plot development.
Law & Order focuses on the case at hand, with some personal stuff thrown in. Grey’s has done an excellent job of finding the happy middle between personal and professional, and they’re just as far in (or damn near) as some of the Law & Order shows are.
I want to know more about Kasey and his mom. I want more of Dawson and Mills. And they better put that new puppy front and center for at least a couple scenes in the next few episodes 😛
