I did watch the second episode of the one-hour block of Happy Endings as well, but I figure I’ll keep them together and wait until I watch the first episode to recap them.
The Following
This one, if possible, was even better than the first episode. We see Claire and Ryan as they first came together, which was pretty great. Shy, nervous at first, but their attraction and chemistry is undeniable.
The episode focuses on a little backstory on the babysitter as well, Emma Hill. How she first met Carroll at a book signing and how his tutelage and introduction to her current lover/partner in crime Will led to the murder of her mother with a kitchen knife.
The “good guys” capture one of Carroll’s followers, Jordy, after he manages to get into Claire’s house. Ryan has to shoot him first, but he lives to write his chapter a little further.
Ryan and Carroll’s chemistry, if you can call it that, is undeniable as well. They play off each other and understand each other in a way that makes the story come naturally.
I’m really loving the “follower” subplot too, with the babysitter and Joey and their former neighbors off on their own. It’s very interesting seeing how one succumbs to a cult-like mentality and Emma is a particularly interesting case study, albeit fictional.
It was nice having CBS Monday off this week so I could watch this show guilt-free, but I’m kind of hoping 2 Broke Girls wraps up their season sooner than later so I can continue enjoying this show without feeling bad for missing part of my usual Monday line-up.
New Girl
Remember how I was saying they needed to do something interesting? Bravo.
Jess and Nick: the saga begins. The flatmates play some strange kind of game involving American history and political terminology, and at one point, they play a round that involves picking a number and holding it up with fingers and whoever’s fingers match another person’s has to go and have a kiss behind the “iron curtain” (metal sliding door).
It ends up being her and Nick. After a prolonged debate about how to accomplish the task, Nick climbs out the window. But not before he says what is possibly the most telling line this show has ever heard:
Jess is a little surprised, but then he climbs out the window and they all have to make sure he doesn’t fall to his death.
Later that night, they hear a scratching at the door (again) and discover it’s their neighbor’s dog. Being alone in the hallway, Nick takes advantage of the moment to get the kiss in the way he thought it should go down.
Seriously–one of the best and most long-awaited kisses in television in recent history. Reminiscent of Ross and Rachel’s first kiss at the Central Perk, with the rain outside, as she’s closing up. Amazing. Jess is still reeling when Sam comes out of her room to get rid of the mannequin with a melon for a head (which Jess drew Nick’s face on). The camera shows the melon burst open as Sam drops it in the hallway.
Is this telling of what will happen with Jess and Nick? We’ll have to keep watching to find out…
Justified
Raylan and Rachel go on the hunt for Lindsay and her thug fighter husband who have made off with his money. He never reveals the amount, but tells Rachel it was “a goodly sum”.
It’s not easy watching him go after a woman who doesn’t deserve him–though outwardly, the search is for the cash–but it’s not easy watching him be hurt about her either.
Rachel leaves him a “gift” when she has to take her leave of him and the search to go in to work. It comes in handy, but Raylan takes a shot from it himself when Lindsay gets a hold of it to make her escape from both him and her husband. (only beanbags–not bullets–don’t worry)
That husband of hers is a bull though–it was kind of nice to see Robert Baker after the glimpse we got on Grey’s Anatomy a couple years ago (he played Charles Percy). He joined the hospital with the Mercy West merger, and died in the horrendous shooting.
He’s good on this show, but after Raylan leaves him handcuffed to a truck full of chickens (for cockfighting, of course), it may be the last time we see him around Harlan.
BTW-preacher died 🙁 Sad to see Joe Mazzello go, but hopefully he’ll be back somewhere on the TV scene soon!
Up next:
Recaps from Wednesday night’s shows, including the premiere of The Americans, on FX! Plus, more recaps from Tuesday night’s episodes of Go On, The New Normal, and Happy Endings!
Thursday recaps to come soon as well 🙂
