Smash
First off, I loved this show last season. It’s fun seeing a musical on TV, and the music is amazing. It has its flaws–mostly dialogue on the part of Anjelica Huston’s role and a little too much cliche in Karen’s small-town personality–but it’s easy to look past those things with such a great ensemble cast and great music.
Karen is still upset with Ivy for sleeping with Dev, to the tune of getting her fired off the show. The show is ready to go to Broadway, but it’s one obstacle after another.
First, the show comes under investigation for its financial resources, Julia’s husband leaves her for good, Derek’s personal life comes under scrutiny as Rebecca Duvall accuses him of harassment, and with show under investigation, Karen and the rest of the cast are out of work. Not to mention, the reviews on Julia’s contribution to Bombshell are less than favorable.
As wrong as things seem to be going, there’s light at the end of the tunnel as Karen happens upon a couple of guys in a bar who are working on their own Broadway musical.
I’m interested to see what happens with this new musical. I think it’ll be nice to get a break from the Marilyn storyline. However, since Julia, Tom and Derek are my favorite characters, I’m most interested in what their next steps will be.
Hawaii Five-0: Sunday
Chin gets kidnapped and instead of ransom, he is dumped in prison so that an ex-cop can get his revenge without being able to hide behind the arm of the law. Once Danny, Kono and Steve figure out he’s missing and not on vacation, they do everything to track him down.
Another Baldwin guest appearance as Daniel arrives to play the bad guy this time. Both Steve and Danny get their punches in, but since he’s not the focal point of the episode, we can only assume he ends up in lock-up. Things are looking up for Chin, when he finally gets out of the prison, as he gets a visit from a pretty infirmary nurse.
They made a pretty big deal about the new Jimi Hendrix music in this episode, but I was kind of disappointed. It was good music–a little less hardcore, but in a good way–but they didn’t really start playing it until like halfway into the show and there wasn’t enough of it for me to appreciate their use of it.
I was a little more interested in Kono’s line in this episode: she and Adam start off cozy in a bubble bath with way too many candles, but he gets up to take a phone call and she starts getting suspicious. Not to blame her, I mean the guy is Yakuza, but I think if she was really that worried, she should have left him a long time ago. She’s doing a little recon trying to find out what he’s up to, going so far as to hack his phone, but there’s no way this is going to end nicely.
Revenge
Daniel whisks Emily away to LA to help him purchase a disaster recovery company. However, he discovers he has to compete with his mother’s interference and Jason Prosser (return of Dylan Walsh!) to get it.
Aiden gets contacted by the Initiative who give him “proof” that they have his sister, and in return, they want him to take out Victoria whom they believe were behind the elevator abduction.
What I don’t understand is how he is so sure that video is recent. It could have been years old and orchestrated to pull him in at just the right time. Now he’s mad at Emily because he blames her for causing his sister’s death when he failed to carry out the assassination of Victoria Grayson. You know what? Fine by me. Emily tells Daniel the truth, that Victoria asked her to step in, so that leaves them free to pursue each other if they decide to.
Emily and Nolan work on tracking Aiden down before he does something crazy like murdering Victoria, but the big story has to do with Nolan’s old project, Carrion. It turns out that Padma was recruited by the Initiative (which we already knew) to get the program, and she let slip that she knew what it was. The question now is: what does the Initiative want with a program like Carrion that can knock out New York City’s lights and power?
The day progresses and we discover it’s Charlotte’s birthday. While Daniel forgot and Victoria had to cancel their ballet tradition, Charlotte has a birthday surprise of her own as she reveals she’s filed to change her name to Clarke.
Conrad buys the Ryan brothers out of the bar so they’ll leave Jack, Amanda, and Declan alone. While it puts them in league with the Greysons who are just as unsavory business partners as the Ryan brothers, it’s preferable because they at least have Charlotte on their side, and should they ever need her help, Emily would be glad step in.
Unfortunately, the Ryan brothers want the bar back and it seems they may have a good enough reason to convince Conrad to give it back. Â With his new political aspirations, he’s much easier to convince.
