Elementary came back with one episode and then took a hiatus for a few weeks, which has allowed me to procrastinate recapping this particular episode, “M” for longer than I otherwise would. In any case, here are few episode recaps that are perhaps a bit overdue…
Elementary
Holmes gets personal. When he discovers that the man who killed Irene Adler has come to New York to kill again, he goes on a manhunt to settle his vendetta. However, instead of discovering the real culprit, he discovers M, a mercenary who kills indiscriminately at the request of another, named Moriarty.
Watson becomes increasingly worried about a relapse with Holmes’s new obsession, and so, after Holmes’s father tells her basically he’s not paying for her to stay on any longer, she decides to stay anyway, paid or not.
Holmes originally planned to torture M to get his revenge for Irene’s death, but he ends up turning him into the police after inflicting only one major injury.
The lure of the puzzle in Moriarty’s dastardly intentions is too great for him to ignore, along with his search for revenge for Irene’s death. Holmes has a new project, to ferret out Moriarty and bring him to justice, or his own version of it.
I’m glad that the writers brought in this plotline. The show works well as a crime drama with a new murder or investigation every week, but having an underlying motive and goal to work toward will make it a little more interesting and heighten some of the drama and suspense.
The Carrie Diaries
I was totally shocked this show pulled it off. I love Sex and the City and I was thrilled to see they were attempting a spin-off prequel of her high school years on the CW.
While I love HBO and the original show, I didn’t get into it until it was a couple seasons in, and as much as I enjoyed it, I didn’t really have a favorite character, and it certainly was never Carrie. Still, AnnaSophia Robb is just too adorable to pass up. The curly hair and sweet, innocent face with that undying love for Manhattan was too much to resist.
The show is just what it sounds like–Carrie Bradshaw as a teenager, developing her love affair with New York and coming of age, discovering boys, sex, and love as she becomes a young woman, and of course, the fashion. However, as shallow or over-played as it sounds, it was a lot more fun than I expected.
I am on the cusp of being too old for the CW teen dramas, and while I do feel like I won’t be able to stick with this one for that reason (along with the fact that its time slot conflicts with 2 Broke Girls and the new Fox show, The Following), I am still going to recommend it!
I don’t want to summarize too much here, but I want to cover some of the things I really liked and I think others will like about this show.
- The Fashion: It may have been the eighties, but Carrie still had the fashion bug and she was good at it! A lot of the fashion inspiration seems to stem from her mother’s influence, whom she had just lost to cancer as the show begins, and her creativity and ingenuity at not only finding fashionable things to wear, but coming up with her own unique way of wearing them is something reminiscent of the HBO show that is really great to see in this one as well.
- The inner monologue: Fans of the HBO show know well how often Carrie narrates her life (directly to the camera in season 1 and then with voiceover later on) and The Carrie Diaries are true to that form. It’s almost eerie how much AnnaSophia Robb sounds like Sarah Jessica Parker. The speech patterns and insights make it a natural connection from the 16 year old Carrie to the adult.
- The writing: In the pilot, Carrie is just beginning to write, using her mother’s old journals as a platform on which to begin honing her craft. It isn’t clear yet that her ambition is to become a writer or even that she has any talent at it, but I’m sure that’s something that will be developed as the show progresses.
Overall, it’s definitely geared at a younger audience, but the show does a great job connecting to its predecessor, Sex and the City, without seeming contrived or unrelatable. Well done, CW.
