I was even more disappointed with this movie than I thought I’d be. On the plus side, it has awesome actors, good outlook for a director, and a great writer, but it just was terrible. Not funny, too predictable, and completely unbelievable.
Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton (reunited after all these years since French Kiss!) are married in this movie. Meg Ryan discovers that Tim Hutton is cheating on her with a much younger woman (Kristen Bell), and she decides to duct tape him to chairs and toilets until he falls back in love with her and dumps his girlfriend.
Ridiculous premise. Ridiculous movie. The only thing that drew me to it was the actors. Cheryl Hines is directing, and Adrienne Shelly (RIP, of Waitress renown) wrote the screenplay. Seemingly a decent combination, but the story itself is too incredible to buy into. It starts out ok, but it gets stupider and crazier as it goes on.
Tim Hutton is playing the same dufus as he was in French Kiss. Meg Ryan is playing a neurotic sap like always, but it’s taken too far without any redeeming qualities. Kristen Bell is a petulant child. And Justin Long as the villain is completely unbelievable because he’s not a tough guy!
There’s supposed to be a twist at the end, I think, but it’s not clear enough what it is, and if it is what I thought, then it completely ruins the happy ending and the movie as a whole, if the movie hadn’t ruined itself already.
Only because I like Adrienne Shelly and the actors, despite their poor showing here.
