Private Practice
This episode is told from Amelia’s perspective. She tries to get back into dating, but it turns out the only man she’s really interested in the new ER doc, James. They spend some time together and really connect, but his conservatism political views throw her a bit, and she is worried her addiction history will become an issue.
We all saw this coming, but because they squeezed several weeks’ worth of time into one episode, I didn’t feel like Amelia really dealt with some of the fears and concerns she had about getting into a relationship again.
Overall, it’s nice to see Amelia allow herself to be happy again, but it’s not one of the most moving episodes, considering the show is down to two episodes now.
Parenthood
The big story lead-in for the week was that Drew and Amy are pregnant. Victor calls the cops on Julia and Joel for child abuse, Crosby is having a hard time dealing with his mother-in-law living in his house, and Adam and Kristina have to adjust to life with a newly pubescent Max.
I was really disappointed with the way that Drew and Amy’s story was handled here. The issue is mostly resolved in one episode and there’s not really a lot of conflict or even discussion about it beyond Mark coming to Sarah with his concern about Drew, and Drew going to Amber for her advice and a little cash to pay for the abortion. They almost revived it at the end when Drew comes to Sarah in tears, but he never explains why (probably left for next week’s show) and it just left me a little unsatisfied with the “big” reveal.
I thought the Max storyline was much more provocative. A child with Aspergers (which as I hear from DSM, is no longer a diagnosis, it’s all just “autism” now) dealing with puberty is no picnic for anyone, so seeing Max go through it is really incredible. I am so pleased with the depth his character has been given this season compared to previous seasons.
It’s gotten really clear that Julia isn’t happy as a stay-at-home mom, and it’s gotten even clearer that her heart isn’t in the adoption anymore. At first, she was so pleased with the progress that had been made, but one misstep not letting Victor see his biological mom and he starts acting out–now, all of a sudden, she can’t do it anymore.
I grant it, adopting a child at that age is really challenging because they have a whole prior life that you weren’t a part of and have little to no insight into. I think it’s a little premature for Julia to be giving up on the adoption, and I definitely think she should have discussed it with Joel before she opened up to the social worker.
