Guys with Kids
Marny’s dad comes by for a visit (Ernie Hudson, you probably remember him as Winston Zeddemore from Ghostbusters!) and makes Gary nervous because he’s never been alone with his father in law without Marny’s mother as a buffer.
Chris is dating again and when he gets stood up, since he got stuck with two tickets (not sure what for…) he invites Sheila, and accidentally goes on a date with his ex.
When Nick and Emily find out, they promise to set him up with someone good. They offer to set Sheila up too, but, in her mind:
There’s no way you know anyone I’d like. -Sheila
Nick and Emily turn the set-up into a competition, with a points structure for how well the date goes. Both dates start off well, but they both go disastrously wrong in different ways.

Another dysfunctional family story though it may be, another “life in the White House” story, but this one is all right. Originally, they had me at “Bill Pullman”. Now that I’ve seen it, Jenna Elfman as the First Lady Emily won me over. She is the best comedic actor, but she’s also the best dramatic actor when those “normal life” issues come up.
Josh Gad (you probably recognize him as second fiddle to Jake Gyllenhaal in Love and Other Drugs or Jim’s Sturgess’s friend in 21) plays Skip, the president’s oldest son, the one who’s always messing up. He dominates the TV spots promoting this show, but he isn’t the star. The president’s youngest kids, Xander and Marigold, are entertaining, too, but this is another one that wins you over with heart first and humor second.
Bill Pullman is very presidential as Dale Gilchrist (couldn’t they have picked a manlier name than Dale though?)–he still has that oratory brilliance, but he hasn’t aged that well. He’s put on some weight and he looks even older than he already is.
Still, he’s entertaining to watch, and the fact that you see more of him as a father and husband in this show than as a leader of a country, it softens up his somewhat gruff-sounding voice and seemingly stolid temperament.

The first real challenge appears when the responsible oldest daughter, Rebecca, gets pregnant on a one night stand. This is obviously an opening for Emily to connect with her, but it’ll still take some time before the two of them are ever close.
Dale talks to his generals and military advisors about how to handle the situation with his daughter, and it actually gives him a little perspective.
Sidenote, Jenna Elfman looks great for her age. I was never a big fan of Dharma and Greg, but I loved her in EdTV and I have always liked her in general, despite some poor career choices. She’s got a great, wacky sense of humor and she’s pretty unafraid when it comes to putting herself out there and doing something completely insane.
Rebecca: What did you tell them?
Emily: A pack of lies! And it worked! See how confused they are?!
