It took me a while, but here are the catch-ups from the last few winter finales.
Last Resort
Sam goes off in search of his wife while Grace takes over XO duties in his stead. They are reunited briefly, but get split up again when Christine is retaken as a captive.
A Chinese envoy arrives to meet with Marcus to discuss some aid and assistance, but it’s unclear what his motives are. I think the Colorado could probably get what they need from somewhere else, somewhere that is less interested in gaining leverage against the US government, but right now, it seems that Marcus thinks this is their only option.
Kylie gets mixed up in what may turn into a coup d’etat. First she gets blackmailed and then she gets roped into something with her ex who’s claiming she could be the catalyst in a coup d’etat in the US, something that hasn’t happened pretty much since the country’s beginnings.
As much as I like this show, there are too many subplots going on and it’s hard to keep up with all of them, despite having been watching from the beginning! I may have to cut this one out of the blog line-up in the spring, I don’t feel like I can adequately sum it up and cover its intricacies in the kind of depth they deserve on top of all the other shows I cover.
Chicago Fire
Dawson asks Casey out and he lets her know he wants to “do it right” which I think means “take it slow”. Cruz lets a gang member die in a fire in order to save his brother from that life.
A particularly obnoxious internal affairs guy comes to track down a fifty thousand dollar necklace that was supposedly “stolen” during a fire. As it turns out, insurance scam.
And, Dawson and Shea are under investigation or suspicion for some drugs missing from their truck–which were in fact removed by Severide some weeks back.
Shea walks out on Severide. She realizes he’s in a lot deeper than she knew, and won’t help him feed his addiction or continue his denial about how serious his injury actually is.
I like the Dawson/Mills romance potential more than the Casey/Dawson pairing. I think Peter Mills is a better fit for Dawson. He can keep her grounded, keep her from getting too emotional. Casey is a bit of a hothead himself, and if Shea were straight, she might be a better fit for him. However, since Shea’s homeless right now, her and Casey living together might be just what the doctor ordered.
However, scary moment at the end, Dawson and Shea are out on a call and a huge truck careens into their emergency vehicle with both of them in the back, not strapped in to anything. One thing’s for sure, the return of the show on Wednesday, 1/2, will be a heck of an intense episode!
Elementary
This was a pretty good one. Holmes meets Watson’s family, and actually sticks up for her profession and its merit. The case itself focuses on a robbery, and then a murder. It’s quite an involved plot, and the safe at the beginning is pretty cool.
Joan has a moment with her mother in which her mom tells her she thinks that she’d be happier as a detective, doing what Holmes does, than as a sober companion. And, in order to keep the show going as a crime and suspense drama, I think she may be right.
Bonus:
A treat from one of the baddest badasses in rock and roll. The guy is over 70 years old and stick rocking harder than guys less than 1/3 his age!
Up next:
Tuesday, New Years Day, we have an all-new Parenthood. Wednesday, American Horror Story: Asylum, Guys with Kids and Chicago Fire return with all new episodes. Thursday, Elementary returns.
Then, next week, most everything else will be back, including the new season of Justified! In the weeks to come, we’ll see new premieres on NBC, the CW, Fox, FX, and more. I’ll do my best to keep up, but I’m considering taking Last Resort and Elementary off the blog to lighten the load a little.
I enjoy the shows, but it’s difficult to do a weekly post on a show that’s very episodic like Elementary–i.e. a show that does not involve many long-term plotlines–as well as a show like Last Resort where it’s too easy to get lost one week to the next because of how deep the plots and subplots rabbit holes go.
