American Horror Story: Asylum
Anne Frank, Nazis, aversion therapy, and Monsignor is not the holiest of them all after all! Wow, what a revealing episode!
First of all, Grace and Kit finally act on those feelings that it’s been so clear that they’ve had for each other. Unfortunately, they get caught. Punishment intended: sterilization. Wow. I didn’t realize that anybody in the US ever did that a regular force of punishment. However, I guess Briarcliff isn’t exactly a regular place.
Afterwards, Kit finds out that Grace did kill her family. She at least had a reason–molested as a child by her father–but it’s hard to say if he will be able to trust her again. She seems so sweet and mild-mannered that becoming an axe-murderer is a a bit far-fetched, but that kind of trauma has the potential to drive any person to madness.
As to Anne Frank, it was a joy to see Franka Potente after so many years! She doesn’t do as much work in the US film and television industry, so after the Bourne films and an episode of Psych!, she kind of dropped of my radar. She’s as passionate as ever, accusing Dr. Arden of being a Nazi soldier.
Based on the little pin that the hooker found in Arden’s house, it’s not that surprising. Speaking of the hooker–the local PD shows up to talk to Arden about an assault she reported. And they know about the pin and the photos.
However, one of the most surprising parts of the episode comes when Sister Jude confronts the Monsignor about Arden (once again) after the police show up and he rebuffs her–pointing out her drunken state during the nor’easter and asking her to question her judgment.
But, after she leaves his office, good ol’ goodie two shoes calls Arden down in his lab and tells him they’re onto him and that he should do whatever house-cleaning he has to while there’s still time. WHOA! Where the hell did that come from? Monsignor knows Arden’s a crook/nutter and he lets him operate on the residents at Briarcliff doing God knows what to their already addled brains?
Meanwhile, Lana is trying to escape and with Dr. Thredson’s help, it looks like she might pull out ahead. Thredson however attempts to “cure” her with some aversion therapy for her homosexuality, a pretty detestable practice in general, but to see it in action, with the doc there watching no less! was truly detestable.
After that, Thredson seems to regret his decision and promises to take Lana with him when he leaves. Still haven’t pinpointed Thredson’s motives here. He seems well-intentioned and like he really wants to help the patients, but then he goes and does something like aversion therapy and showing Kit photos of murders he didn’t commit and it gets confusing again.
Sister Mary Eunice was hardly in this one, but Sister Jude remarks on her “improvement”. Seeing as she’s still possessed, this is a little bit funny to us as viewers. Just saying.
Another big shocker, Anne gets a gun and opens up the locked room in Arden’s dungeon and discovers a disfigured and boil-covered Shelly who appears to be devolving into one of the doctor’s creatures already.
Can’t wait to find out what happens next–Arden arrested? Lana escaping? Kit castrated? And what are the Monsignor and Dr. Thredson up to??
Nashville
This one got a little too melodramatic and even soapy for my taste. I have been a pretty loyal Days of Our Lives fan for (don’t judge me) ten years now, so I know soaps and melodrama. Juliette discovers her mother using in her own house with a strange man and brings Deacon in to help get her mother into rehab. Seriously? He’s a good guy and he agrees to it, but it seems so false. This is a guy who doesn’t even know her. Sure he had his own substance problems and relate in that way, but it still seemed a bit contrived to me.
Teddy got his ass whooped in the debate. No surprise there. The man just comes off like a doormat.
Rayna meanwhile tries her hand at songwriting without Deacon.
The triangles are unraveling (sorry, mixed metaphors) all over the place. Rayna, Teddy and Deacon seem to split apart, but the minute Teddy really puts his foot in it, and because of the kind of guy he is, it’ll happen sooner or later, Rayna’s going straight back to Deacon.
Avery, Scarlett and Gunnar are falling apart too. Gunnar and Avery get into it over Avery’s excessive guitar playing bit and Avery shoots back with the googly eyes Gunnar and Scarlett were making at each other during the song. Scarlett is still convinced that she and Avery are right for each other and tells Gunnar not to get caught up in anything different. But we all know how this is going to play out. Avery is going to get jealous and say something truly awful that Scarlett isn’t going to be able to forgive so easily and she is going to end up, whether on purpose or not, telling Gunnar all about it.
It’s starting to get a little boring and predictable, so I may start watching Chicago Fire on the first run until/unless things improve. I’m ok with soapy stories, but they have to pack more of a punch than a few love triangles, some substance abuse, shady politicians and country music. You want melodramatic, you better milk it!
It just occurred to me I’m watching AHS, a show Connie Britton used to be on, and then Nashville, her current show. Kind of funny.
This week:
I plan to do a recap of Chicago Fire, but it may not be until this afternoon or Friday. If that happens, it will be included with the recaps I’ll do for Thursday’s episodes that will be sacrificed on the altar of all things that BURN.
As to Thursday’s line-up, BURN NOTICE RETURNS WITH A TWO-HOUR PREMIERE!!!! ‘Nuff said. No, I’ll go on. 🙂
Burn Notice starts first, which means I’ll have to catch up on Last Resort and Grey’s the next day. I will still tune in for Elementary at its regularly scheduled time and for an encore of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia right after.
Nano’s heating up–watching the election results and speeches threw me off my goal a bit, but I’m hoping to get back on track (even though I’m ahead of the overall word count goal, I’m falling behind on my daily goal).
Don’t miss Burn Notice Thursday night!!
