Here’s the tally for the major networks that have made the cut this far into the fall season (you’ll discover the reasoning on some of these numbers below):
- CBS: 4, 2 still undecided
- ABC: 3, 1 on occasion
- NBC: 4, 2 undecided
- Fox: 1
So Fox has made it even more difficult to watch their shows online. To watch last night’s episode, you have to sign in with your TV provider. No big. I’m familiar with that drill. But, you also have to sign into Fox.com–which you have to do first–AND then your TV provider. And wonder of wonders, the particular TV provider we have at my house is not on Fox’s affiliated providers list, which you can’t find out until AFTER you sign into Fox.com. Which is bullshit.
So, The Mob Doctor is going byebye for 8 days until after the episode airs, and eventually, The Mindy Project will also go that way. Because these shows are not on my priority must-watch list to begin with, they’re getting crossed off the list completely.
Ergo, New Girl is the last show standing in the Fox line-up this fall on Always Happy to Entertain You. On that somewhat sour note, on we go to Tuesday night’s episodes.
Ben and Kate
As sweet as this show can be, I think it’s time to cross it off the list. It’s funny and sweet, but not often enough. Lost another one, Fox.
New Girl
Schmidt and Jess try to fit in with a bunch of millenial hipsters while Nick and Winston try to find ways to prank Schmidt. The only way I could love this show more is if it were on at 7 instead of 8 so I could watch Go On in the same night!
It’s funny and offbeat in a way that is really relatable. Sure, the characters are all a little exaggerated and sometimes the scenarios are too, but they are the kind of people you’d want to hang out with and they’re the kind of friends, pranks and all, that really have each other’s backs.
The New Normal
Shania has a “pretend” wedding, but Nana gets in the way and ruins it for everybody. Goldie asks her to go back home to Ohio, but Nana shows a moment of humanity in declaring her love for her family, despite their different ideals and values.
And, the show wraps up with by far one of the sweetest proposals ever. Bryan and David get engaged, with their unborn child (and Goldie) in attendance.
Private Practice
Violet, Charlotte, and Addison are all trying to deal with their grief, and the guys can do nothing but stand by and watch, trying to help when they can.
Charlotte is still coping with her multiple pregnancy and is over-working herself to keep her mind off it and Pete’s death.
Violet is trying to get used to Pete’s death, especially helping her son understand it. She is participating in a grief support group, but knowing that her 3 year old is trying to understand it in his own way is hard to deal with.
Addison’s grief is the most personal for me and I suspect for many others who followed this spinoff from Grey’s and knew the history behind her relationship with Mark and with Derek. Whatever their relationship was, an infidelity, a cruelty, whatever, there was love there and there was loss.
Jake took the news like a man, and as many relationships as Addison has been through over the years, he’s the too-good-to-be-true guy that she should hang onto, but knowing her, it’s not going to be a straight path.
This week:
I will catch-up Tuesday night’s episodes that I missed a little later, including last week’s episode of New Girl that I missed, as well as Go On, Vegas, and Parenthood. Unless they really get me this time, this may be the last week of coverage on Vegas.
Looking to Wednesday night, we’ve got NBC comedy and the premieres of Chicago Fire and Nashville. As far as I can tell, Chicago Fire looks like a ripoff of Ladder 49 and Rescue Me, both of which set the bar pretty high as far as fireman shows/films go. It looks a little too focused on the pretty people than the dynamic in the firehouse, which was the best part about Rescue Me in my opinion.
As for Nashville, the hype has been too high for me to speculate much. I love Connie Britton–going back to the first time I watched her in The Brothers McMullen and Spin City, not to mention her amazing performance in American Horror Story last season. Hayden Pannettiere has her moments–loved her on Heroes–but honestly, I’m not sure I can sit through a show that centers around country music.
If there’s anything that is like nails on a chalkboard for me, it’s modern country music. But, if the show really is as good as the critics claim, I may be able to make an exception. We will find out, Wednesday night.
Tune in tomorrow for coverage of new premieres and the recap on NBC’s new Wednesday night comedies, Animal Practice and Guys With Kids.
