So remember how they had the presidential debate last Wednesday and I thought that NBC comedies weren’t on? At some point, they did air, though nobody told me about it, and they appeared in my Hulu queue. So, I watched them. And the rest of Last Resort and Scandal. Here’s what I/you may have missed.
Animal Practice
This was, once again, entertaining, but still not stellar. The best parts include Dr. Yamamoto and Rizzo (the monkey)–especially focusing on Yamamoto’s fear of puppets. The quirky characters are still fun to watch, but I’m still not invested in them enough to make this a must-watch show.
Guys with Kids
I feel like this one actually dipped a bit in funniness compared to last week. It’s starting to get into the insecurities of each couple/dad character, and it seemed a little overwhelming with so much going on at once. It’s still enjoyable, though, for what it is–a guy/dad comedy about parenting.
Last Resort
While I liked watching Up All Night last week, this turned out to be a pretty good episode. I must have been too distracted to really enjoy it when it was on–not hard to believe–because when I watched the second half of it last night, I really enjoyed it.
I’m still not convinced it’s in a good time slot, which means it’s probably losing out on viewers it could be getting on another night, but it’s fun while it lasts. The depth of Andre Braugher’s and Scott Speedman’s characters is just starting to get interesting! And I am still having fun catching Whedon alum, Dichen Lachman. I have a feeling her role/screen time might start to grow over the next few weeks.
Scandal
This episode was a lot of fun. Part of the reason I’ve still got it in my Hulu queue is because I love Guillermo Diaz–another Weeds alum like Justin Kirk (Animal Practice). He was a lot of fun to watch on Weeds and even though he’s playing a slightly different personality on Scandal–not nearly as confident, a little OCD–he’s probably my favorite character on the show. Will never get over him calling Nancy “blanca”. It cracked me up. Kerry Washington is Wonder Woman, but Diaz is the unlikely comic relief.
I am not a big fan of Tony Goldwyn (never will forgive him for being the guy responsible for Swayze’s death in Ghost), but the late-night phone calls between Fitz and Olivia are sweet and actually create a much better dynamic between them than the in-person affair. Part of the reason I’m not desperately in love with this show is Quinn is not likeable enough as a protagonist for me to care too much what happened to her ex-boyfriend or her old identity.
This week:
I just watched Revenge and 666 Park Avenue, so I’ll post the recap of those tomorrow morning. REVENGE TWISTS ABOUND, so stay tuned.
Looking ahead, we’ve got CBS Monday night comedies and Five-0 to look forward to, as well as the premieres of Nashville and Chicago Fire coming up later this week. They are promoting the shit out of Nashville compared to Chicago Fire, so I’m betting the ratings will be better for premiere night on the basis of that alone. To be fair, I might save my post on Wednesday until a little later Thursday so I can include both shows in the post as a side by side evaluation. We’ll see.
Hope you had a good weekend, and tune in tomorrow for coverage of ABC Sunday night!
