Fox pulled a fast one on me, and this week’s episode of New Girl aired at the same time as Go On. Therefore, I’m now two episodes behind, and will be for the next two weeks until those episodes are available online. Stupid Fox.
In any case, onto (Monday’s recap and) the Tuesday episodes that I did see.
The Mob Doctor
This one was a pretty complicated episode: Grace treats the daughter in a family of four who was in a car accident. The little girl didn’t make it. Soon afterward, she is called in by Constantine to treat a man whose injuries are consistent with a car accident, and who turns out to be the drunk driver who caused the accident that killed the little girl.
As an added shock, the guy Grace was indebted to in the pilot, Moretti, is still alive. The plot thickens further as we learn that Grace used to go out with Franco, one of the men who now works for the big boss, Constantine. However, we also discover that Franco is playing both sides, Constantine’s and ‘s side.
Plenty of intrigue to keep the story going, in my opinion, but it is a sort of slow-moving show, which may be why it’s not doing so well in the ratings.
Ben and Kate
I was pleasantly surprised this week. This episode was much better than last week’s and had more funny points in it than the previous episode. It still has a long way to go in my book to become a must-see, but if it keeps improving, I’m glad to tune in.
Go On
The group learns that their leader is actually working part-time as a valet, and is trying to get her real estate license–the only problem being that she has test anxiety issues. The group comes together to help her get over the anxiety and pass her test.
Ryan is visited by the “ghost” or “projection” of his dead wife Janey, who tells him to go grocery shopping and start cooking for himself. He is forced to deal with some of the issues that he hasn’t yet allowed himself to face after her death, and once he realizes what Janey is trying to get him to do, she disappears. This particular plotline leads to a really funny scene in the supermarket with him following another man around and mimicking his shopping habits and purchases because that guy seems to know what he’s doing.
One of the things I really enjoy about this show is how close the group members are. They don’t really know each other and some of them don’t even really like each other, but they are all going through the same thing and it helps them come together and support each other, through thick and thin. And no issue is too small for them to work through.
The New Normal
Ellen Barkin’s character Nana gets her groove on and has to deal with being an older woman who’s comfortable with her libido–something she’s clearly never been good at. Despite her awful remarks and narrow-minded point of view on just about everything, she really is a funny, likeable character–even if you root against her sometimes.
Parenthood
The focus shifted away from Christina a little bit during this episode toward Jabar, Jasmine, and Crosby who have to face racial issues in this episode. Also, there was an appearance by Hank’s daughter and, with a little help from Sarah, a little father-daughter bonding.
I could probably write an essay on this episode, but I’ll try to keep it short. The racial issue has never cropped up so strongly before in this show, despite Crosby and Jasmine being an interracial couple raising a mixed race child. This one kind of slapped me in the face because I never saw it coming. But, Jasmine handled it like a pro, and while it seems resolved for now, I’m sure that this is going to be a factor in Jabar’s life as he gets older.
Another plot in this episode was Zeek’s arrival at the veteran center (I’m not sure what it’s called–a place for military veterans to get help with careers and to have a little company among other vets). It clearly brought up some painful memories of his time serving in Vietnam, but he does a good thing helping out another young veteran find some opportunities to move on.
I hope that Zeek keeps going, because I think that this is a good way for his character to get more involved and soften up a little bit in the name of charity and good will.
This week:
Wednesday is a slow day, with Animal Practice and Guys with Kids being the only two on my list (and Animal Practice may not stay there for long), but I’ll catch up tomorrow afternoon on the episode of New Girl I missed last week as well as Tuesday’s Private Practice. Not sure what we’re going to do about this scheduling conflict with New Girl and Go On. I really like them both, but because of Fox’s evil plan not to put episodes online until 8 days later, versus NBC who always puts them up the next day, I may end up tuning in to New Girl a little more in the future and catching up with Go On the next day.
