Tuesday Night Recap–The Competition Heats Up

3 October 2012 by Jess

Aside from running behind schedule today, my computer overheated and crashed. And, no matter how many times it does that, I still continue to write my blog posts in Notepad format, not saving them, before I copy them over to Blogger. So, this is the second first draft of a post I had almost finished. Insert curse words here.

New Girl

Kinda wish that it had crashed before I watched New Girl, because this episode would have cheered me up. It was one of the funniest episodes of the show I’ve seen in a while, as Jess, recently unemployed, decides to “go off the grid”. She pretends to be a girl named Katie to hook up with a guy who’d been emailing a girl named Katie and was meeting her for the first time. Jess also asks Nick to give her number to a guy at the bar, but Nick gives it to the wrong guy, and hilarity ensues.

The Mindy Project

This show seems to be on better footing this week than last. The pilot episode seemed to be too concerned with expository details and this week, the characters seemed to be settled into themselves better, and the viewer could get a better idea of how they were going to interact in the long run.

Mindy and Danny butt heads over hiring a new nurse. Because they are complete opposites, this is pretty funny, but it’s not going to be funny forever. I hope the writers don’t overplay this, because they really make a good scene together as long as they don’t take the joke too far.

Private Practice

What a heavy episode! Sheldon ends up treating a patient who is a pedophile, a man who tries to kill himself because of his inclinations. While there’s no excuse or apology for a person like that, I think Sheldon made the right decision in saving the man. Saving a life is always better than losing one, no matter whose life it is. But that’s a post for a different blog.

Meanwhile, everyone is still reeling from Pete’s death. Violet is obviously still in shock, but after a little weed and too many tears from all the guests who wanted to tell their stories about how Pete saved their lives or their loved ones, she breaks down.

Addison gets a call from Derek, and learns that Mark was taken off life support, and becomes one of the teary guests at Pete’s wake. For some reason, it didn’t occur to me that Mark’s death up in Seattle would play a role down in LA, but he was a big part of Addison’s life once, so it makes sense.

No matter how crazy things get or how much they may overreact to something, these guys really are a family and they stick up for each other and support each other.

Vegas

This one was action-packed and entertaining. I especially like the new blonde from Chicago that arrives to help clean up the casino. Savino’s firing people left and right for stealing and skimming and trying to give the place a little more class. She looks to be a bit of an issue for Savino as a daddy’s girl who always gets her way, but he’s undoubtedly a guy who can handle his business.

Dennis Quaid isn’t going to be Harrison Ford no matter how low or scratchy he makes his voice sound. He isn’t a bad cowboy/sheriff, but his character is overdone. The dialogue is too overplayed, the moves are too familiar, and even though he’s solving murders and Savino is the bad guy, he’s not as likeable as the other characters on the show.

This week:

We have Guys with Kids and Animal Practice up tonight, and then more Thursday night drama tomorrow.
Will these comedies last, or will NBC have to come up with a new line-up in the spring?

Check back tomorrow for a recap of NBC Wednesday night comedy!

About the Blog

This is a place to share my love and excessive fandom of film, actors, and television. I gush a lot, and I complain a lot, usually not simultaneously.

I share my take on the latest movies I’ve seen (some new, some new to me, and some classics that are worth a rewatch), and a little promotion here and there for shows or films that I feel deserve a little more attention than they’re getting.

So, kick back, settle in, switch on, tune in, or whatever you have to do and join in on the love for all things that move on-screen.
