Revenge
Look at us lucky Revenge fans! Victoria’s alive. Emily is not only out to avenge Daddy, but Mommy as well (brief appearance by new cast member, Jennifer Jason Leigh!). Nolan got a haircut. That sums up most of what happened in the season premiere of Revenge on its new night and time.
LOVING IT. This season looks to be a little more of a mystery/suspense plotline than the all-out vengeance plot of season one. And that’s no surprise, nor disappointment. It looks to be just as heavy, just as sexy, and just as dastardly brilliant as the first season.
As usual, Victoria’s pulling strings behind the scenes, with only three people–Charlotte, Emily, and Nolan–being aware of her survival. It’ll be interesting to see how Emily manages to get back in with the Graysons if Daniel is off the menu. And I can’t wait to see what Victoria does next. Madeleine Stowe is awesome as that cold, hard bitch you love to hate.

I was a little distracted tonight while watching this show–busy searching out book reviewers for my latest novel–but it was pretty good for a premiere. It packed a lot of information and a lot of foreshadowing and subplots into a pilot, so I think even someone who hadn’t been multi-tasking might have had a little trouble keeping up.
We have a Lady Macbeth scene, “Out! Out! Damned spot!” as Jane (Rachael Taylor) meets one of the neighbors with blood on his hands, which he proceeds to wash off with little effect. Jane discovers a mysterious mosaic in the basement of the historic building she and her boyfriend have just taken over the management for, and she traces it back to some kind of cult.
It’s pretty clear that the building has a little paranormality to it. The man with the blood on his hands seems to have a ghost for a wife, and in the opening scene, a musician is sucked through a square section of the front door.
The landlords, Terry O’Quinn and Vanessa Williams, aka the Dorans, seem to be up to something as well. Sort of collecting contracts from their tenants, it seems–not unlike Satan getting souls in exchange for certain actions or agreements. And, trying to end on a cliffhanger/high note (sorry for the bad jokes) it went out with the Lady MacBeth guy’s wife jumping/falling off the roof to her death (undeath?) with Jane as a witness.
I thought it was pretty clever making Jane the repair woman and the one who knows and has an interest in architecture, historic landmarks, etc. It makes the story a little too easy in a sense, but I’m ok with it. It definitely tried to take a page out of American Horror Story‘s book, but it can’t create the same sort of terror and shock that AHS did. It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out–or if it even hooked a big enough audience to have a chance to play out.
Speaking of ratings:
ABC and CBS aren’t ready to admit defeat, proclaiming Vegas and The Neighbors “new hit shows” or some such thing. Vegas, I’ll grant. The Neighbors, no. That was just awful. I have a feeling Yahoo! may have jumped the gun on the ratings fears as they pertain to all of the shows on their list, but I do think that there are a few shows on that list that won’t survive more than a few weeks.

Minor tangent: I ran out of episodes of HIMYM and Weeds on Netflix, so it’s back to Numb3rs, The X Files, and Ally McBeal. Stupid Netflix. Or networks. I want more seasons!
Coming up this week:
Tomorrow night, it’s October! And to start off the month right, we have week 2 of CBS comedy Monday and Five-0. With Ed Asner as the villain on Five-0, I can hardly wait!
We’ll see how The Mob Doctor and Partners fare, as they seem to be the weakest links in the Monday night line-up (on my to-watch list, anyway), despite how I feel about their redeeming qualities and actors.
Thanks for reading!
Be sure to check in tomorrow for a recap of Monday night’s shows!
