Last Resort
I went back and forth on this show before it premiered. Some of the spots looked great and others looked a little lame. But, finally, I decided to tune in. Totally worth it. I even skipped Up All Night to watch it all the way through.
Part of what drew me in was the resemblance to an ebook I just read, The 50 Megaton Tweet by RC Wade. A US Naval submarine, the Colorado, gets orders to fire on Pakistan. The order comes through an unusual, and less secure, channel, so the captain (Andre Braugher) requests confirmation of it and is subsequently relieved of duty.
The sub gets fired on after the new captain (Scott Speedman) refuses to fire either, but here’s the kicker–the US attacks its own ship. Basically for disobeying an order. An order that may not (and almost certainly did not) have come down from the Commander in Chief in the first place. The sub is stranded near an island, I think in the Mediterranean, which is where the next episode will likely start.
It was a little scary, a little too realistic, and it kept you wondering. Starting a nuclear war with Pakistan? Whose brilliant idea was that? Looking forward to next week to find out what happens with this war, that seems inadvertently started by the wrong people, and what the naval soldiers (is that the right term?) and officers will do now that they’ve declared anarchy and expatriated themselves from the US government and the US Navy.
Bonus: Joss Whedon fans will recognize Sierra from Dollhouse making an appearance in the show, possibly for the long term. 😀
Grey’s Anatomy
So… I was kind of expecting everybody to be in the woods. Instead, the Grey’s premiere opens at Seattle Grace, and within the first few minutes, we see what became of the survivors of the plane crash.
- Meredith has a new attending nickname, Medusa. Scary snake-haired lady who turns people (men, if we’re being true to the myth) to stone with her eyes.
- Derek has a scar on his arm and seems a little edgy about the possibility of performing surgery.
- Yang is frozen in Minnesota where her fellowship is.
- Mark is in a coma in a hospital bed, and Arizona is nowhere to be seen.
- Lexie of course, died in the finale last season, and there are a new batch of interns at Seattle Grace. (Even after the merger, it’s always going to be Seattle Grace to me.)
Addison, and Isobel are all here!– There are several flashbacks throughout the episode. At first, they seem to be just flashbacks of people at the hospital, but as it went on, I realized they were all of Mark. His living will requested that he be taken off life support and the show is essentially a countdown to that hour.
Even though I knew Eric Dane was leaving the show, it didn’t occur to me that his character was going to die to do it. So seeing McSteamy die in a hospital bed, without Lexie, and leaving his sweet little daughter behind was hard to watch.
Most of the doctors now have a fear of flying, including Alex, who wasn’t even on the plane that crashed. Cristina is supposed to come to Seattle to say goodbye to Mark but can’t get on the plane. Meredith tries to go visit Cristina and can’t get on the plane, and Alex is supposed to go to Johns Hopkins and can’t get on the plane.
The only one who succeeds is Owen, who goes to visit the former chief resident who didn’t pass her boards to ask her back. (Couldn’t remember her name for a moment, but just as I attempt to look it up, it hits me: Kepner!) Alex saw Hunt at the airport and assumed he was going to visit Cristina, but in fact, he went to Iowa or wherever to see April.
Heavy episode. As always. Well done. Looking forward to seeing Medusa Grey and BCB (Google Bailey’s new nickname–how far the Nazi has fallen), aka Dr. Bailey, and the rest of the crew this year.
Elementary
What makes this show so good? I’ll prove it to you: Elementary, my dear Watson.
- Elvis Costello music is awesome.
- A show that plays Elvis Costello music is awesome (because nobody does that and I don’t know why!).
- Elementary played Elvis Costello music, “Watching the Detectives”
Therefore, Elementary is awesome.
If you agree with my premises, I have just proven through formal logic that this show is awesome.
But that’s not the only reason. Sherlock Holmes is a British recovering addict living in modern-day New York City. Lucy Liu plays Jane Watson, a former surgeon (aka Dr. Watson) who has become a companion for recovering addicts to help them readjust to a regular routine, and is assigned to Holmes through his father’s request.
Don’t tell me that doesn’t sound fun. It is another crime drama series, but it’s not like all the other crime series out there. The intricate details and observations that we all know as trademark Holmes are all there. And Lucy Liu’s Watson does very well living up to the name. When Holmes misses something, or when she can add a medical perspective to a case, she does so. It’s pretty fun seeing Watson as a woman. Should level Holmes out a bit.
This week:
I’ll catch Scandal and Up All Night on Hulu, and post a catch-up tomorrow, but at far as I’m concerned, Scandal is relegated to back-up alternate unless, God forbid, Elementary doesn’t get picked up. I’ll probably switch off between Up All Night and Last Resort, but as we dedicated Grey’s fans know, ABC is notorious for going on excessively long breaks throughout the season, so I may not even miss much of Last Resort.
It’s already Friday! Crazy how fast this week went. I don’t have any Friday regulars except Bill Maher, who is off this week, so I will likely be on a little break myself until Sunday when Revenge returns, as well as the premiere of 666 Park Avenue.
Can’t wait for this one–I loved Rachael Taylor for the brief time she played on Grey’s Anatomy, and I loved the short-lived Charlie’s Angels last year, and I’m glad they keep giving her parts on ABC.
This show looks a little in the fashion of American Horror Story (take a minute to enjoy the fact that network is trying to copy cable instead of the other way around!), but since it is network, it won’t be able to go as far as that show did (can’t wait for that one to return to FX next month!). In any case, haunted apartment building with creepy landlords looks interesting.
So, looking to next week, we’ve already seen one show get the boot, sorry Revolution. Will any more fall in the coming weeks? Nothing to do but wait and watch!
Tune in Monday for a recap of ABC Sunday night!
