Animal Practice
Tangent, right off the bat: the first thing I notice watching this show is the Colorado State sweatshirt that one of the characters is wearing. (Go Rams!) His dog is called Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong. It’s that kind of show.
I was really looking forward to it because (and I know I say this a lot) I’ve been watching Justin Kirk since Angels in America. He was awesome in that, and he was even more awesome in Weeds, and now that he’s on once a week on a regular network program, I was looking forward to a regular dose of his comedic genius.
However, I’m sorry to say that the monkey stole the show. A monkey who finger (paw?) paints and Tebows? Seriously? You cannot get any cuter/funnier than that. They overdid it trying to make the other characters really quirky and weird, so the monkey really was the darling of the show. JoAnna Garcia Swisher also has a title role. Unfortunately, I think her role on Better with You was funnier and more enjoyable. (It wasn’t awesome, but it was funny! It shouldn’t have been canceled so soon.)
Overall, it’s a funny show, but I’m not sure if it has enough to it to keep it going.
Guys with Kids
It’s fun to see a parenthood comedy from the guys’ perspective. This one definitely beat Animal Practice in number of laughs, and it’s pretty enjoyable even if the characters are maybe a little too familiar: single divorced dad, overconfident, doesn’t-play-by-the-rules dad, and dad who is always trying not to piss his wife off. It’s a little strange to see Jamie-Lynn Sigler in a comedic role, but she’s pretty adorable.
Jesse Bradford is probably the most familiar person for me, but many of you will probably recognize Anthony Anderson from the Scary Movie franchise or Law and Order. This one has a good chance of sticking around, and since it was created by Jimmy Fallon, an NBC staple for several years now, I think it’s here to stay.
This week:
Thursday night brings the return of Grey’s Anatomy! Who will stay and who will go? Who lives, who dies? We don’t know until we watch!
Also airing Thursday night is the new ABC drama Last Resort. I’m not sure how this will play out. On the one hand, Andre Braugher is a genius, and who doesn’t love Scott Speedman? On the other, how can they actually get an entire season out of this premise? How long are they gonna stay in on that island? Do we really want to watch a repeat of Lost? We shall see. I’ll only get to catch the first half since I’m going to switch to Up All Night midway through, but we’ll play catch-up Friday morning for the rest of it. Unless it’s so good that I forget to change channels…
And, last but not least, the return of Scandal to ABC and the debut of Elementary on CBS air after Grey’s Anatomy. As much as I really loved some of the actors and characters in Scandal, I think I love Lucy Liu more. From Ally McBeal to Charlie’s Angels to Dirty Sexy Money, the woman is a lot of fun to watch. She’s playing Watson to Elementary‘s Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) and I’m interested to see how a modern Sherlock Holmes story plays out on a television series.
Scandal was fun, but I think if I want a real scandal, I’ll wait for Revenge on ABC Sunday. I haven’t mentioned it until now, but that show is one of my most awaited fall premieres.
Stay tuned for an action-packed drama-filled Thursday review!
