Had some errands to run this morning, so this one’s going up a little later than I originally intended. Here’s a recap of the Tuesday night shows that were in conflict with some of the other regulars.
Parenthood
Wow–heavy stuff. Zeek gets pulled over and then arrested with the grandkids in the car. Max gets obsessed with a snack machine. But the focus is on Christina and Adam and her impending fight against cancer.
I was really amazed that they were able to keep it a secret the entire episode from the rest of the family, with the exception of Amber. When this kind of thing happens, usually somebody walks in on a conversation or picks up on something and asks about it and it turns into a major argument/discussion/drama. This time, Christina was allowed to worry and talk and ask questions without having the added weight of the rest of the family’s worries and questions on her mind. It was really great to see her and Adam talk through it and experience it on their own.
It will be a long road, but I’m sure Christina will come out of it ok. Once she and Adam eventually do tell the family, they will have such an amazing support system to help them get through it, and that will be a big relief.
Vegas
My first thoughts when I started this one were: You’re trying to run a period piece on network television? Come on. Did we not see how Pan Am crashed and burned, despite all the pretty people? And Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis are not pretty (Dennis Quaid a little, but he’s a little too grouchy to be that appealing on this show).
But, as the show went on, it actually wasn’t bad. It’s sort of like a cop show set in the 60s in Vegas, cowboy vs. mobster. (Like I need another cop show on the roster, seriously.) Michael Chiklis was really good–solid mob guy. Dennis Quaid’s character is maybe trying too hard to be Dirty Harry.
One of the saving qualities was Carrie Anne Moss, who is amazing. She’s playing an ADA, and seeing her in 60s-era clothes in a dusty Las Vegas is pretty fun because way too many people only remember her from The Matrix and this ought to broaden their horizons at least. All in all, mixed feelings on this one, but we’ll see if it improves or levels out in the coming week(s).
The Mindy Project
I did not have high expectations for this one, but it was kind of cute in a crazy, quirky kind of way. I don’t watch The Office (insert gasp here) so I wasn’t really drawn to this one for that reason. I like sitcoms, being the 90s kid I am, and this one looked like a decent one.
The male counterparts I think saved it for me, with an appearance by Ed Helms, and then the other two guys that she works with. They’re all funny in their own ways–the really good-looking British guy is kind of like the Mark Sloane of the group and the other guy that keeps stealing her deliveries (she’s an OB-GYN) is kind of like Dr. Cox (mixing references, but that’s ok :).
It’s not slapstick humor like a lot of sitcoms, so it does maintain some of the Office-style humor in that way. I think the biggest thing is I’m not sure Mindy is a likeable protagonist. She’s realistic, for sure, but she seems kind of like one of those characters who keeps complaining about X and then never ever does anything to try to fix it and just keeps going along with X. Those kind of characters are only fun to watch for a while. Then they’re boring.
We’ll see how she holds up in Week 2.
This week:
So, Fox is withholding New Girl episodes for 8 days–since it’s already established, I get that. I’ll just have to catch their second episode next week after the third episode already airs… (Why 8 days? Why not 6?)
Anyway, tonight we have Animal Practice with Justin Kirk, aka Uncle Andy from Showtime’s Weeds, and Guys with Kids, the new comedy from Jimmy Fallon with another fun favorite, Jesse Bradford (remember that guy from Swimfan and Cliff from Bring It On?). I am really looking forward to these ones, so hopefully they hold up under the ABC comedy night competition.
My cable shows are in between seasons right now, so my Wednesday nights are going to be empty if these shows suck. (Still desperately waiting for the return of Psych! in the next couple months.)
Look for a new post tomorrow covering the Wednesday night newbies. Plus, Friday will cover the HUGE premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, as well as Last Resort, and Scandal or Elementary!
