What a long day! I was in my car for about 2 or 3 hours straight driving to the airport and back, and I think the sun glare may have baked my poor little eyeballs a little. However, I was able to stay up long enough to catch NBC Tuesday!
NBC Tuesday: Week 2
Go On
I was a little lukewarm on the pilot despite my enthusiasm for seeing Matthew Perry on TV again, but this week solidified my resolve. Go On is not only touching, it’s funny!
Ryan (Perry) finally tells his gardener about his wife’s death, and ends up with a gigantic, colorful fountain in his backyard dedicated to his wife’s memory. Sweet, in a hilarious way. The group members get a little more depth and backstory, and John Cho tries to be a nurturing friend. Looking forward to next week! But the 8pm time slot isn’t the one we have to worry about…
The New Normal
This show got into some heavy issues this week: intolerance and standing up to bullies/bigots being one of them. While the show is primarily a comedy–Ellen Barkin once again pushes the envelope for awesome lady with comedic chops–bringing LGBT issues into the mix tweaks at the heartstrings a little bit. It’s hard to watch people be so mean to these two men, even if it’s just a television show, because it’s something that happens every day in real life, too. I just think, if people knew them better, maybe they wouldn’t be so hateful and judgmental, but it’s not that easy.
Even after Will and Grace, which seemed like such a milestone in television for LGBT awareness and acceptance, America unfortunately still has a long way to go before we can put such intolerance behind us.
Parenthood
I didn’t bring up Ray Romano last week, which was an oversight on my part, though I wasn’t sure if he was going to stick around for long. Now, it seems clear he will play a larger role in the show this season as Sarah’s boss. And in this episode, as a father figure for Drew.
Drew’s girlfriend dumps him on the first day of school–predictable after the icy reception she gave him last week after returning from camp–and Ray’s character Hank gives him a little advice on handling a bad break-up. Even with his cantankerous attitude and seemingly apathetic view on the world, I think Hank is going to be a great addition to the show, and it’s pretty clear already, he intends to compete with Mark for Sarah’s affections, eventually.
The big twist is going to be Christina’s apparently bad news mammogram results. Christina is one of my favorite characters, so watching her fight against breast cancer, if that’s really what it is, is going to be rough. She’s such a sweet person, and she really has to handle a lot with one kid off at college across the country, another kid with Asperger’s, and a new baby, and now to throw cancer in is a really tough break.
Follow Up to Revolution
Apparently, my opinion about it being not so interesting was among the minority because NBC is already broadcasting the ratings for Revolution as being a “must-watch”. I have a feeling most of that was due to lingering viewers after The Voice, but we’ll see how it goes. Maybe next week’s episode will grab my attention better than the first one did.
Up Next:
However, next week is going to be a tough call: Private Practice moved to Tuesday nights late in the season last spring, now airing at the same time as Parenthood, with the premiere next Tuesday. I haven’t made up my mind which one to watch yet.
In addition, Fox starts its fall Tuesday lineup next week, with the return of New Girl (yay!), and the series premieres of Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project. Unfortunately, The Mindy Project conflicts with The New Normal, and unfortunately for Fox, that show’s already won me over. I’ll catch Mindy on Hulu or Fox.com (if I can) the next day.
I know Fox usually has a week delay before releasing past episodes, but sometimes for new seasons, they open it up earlier. I wanted to give The Mindy Project a chance, because it looks like a decent hospital comedy, reminiscent of Scrubs, to me anyway, but if Fox is going to make it difficult to keep up with online, it may get nixed on my watchlist this year.
In any case, tune in Friday for a recap of the Up All Night season premiere! Will Arnett and Christina Applegate are the some of the funniest people on TV. Can’t wait!
